On the night of May 5th, Byun Baekhyun gets himself grounded.

Which is to say, he more or less tried propelling himself out of his bedroom window in an attempt to sneak out and meet his boyfriend. The tree he normally climbs down had been trimmed earlier this month, meaning his normal route of escape is entirely more dangerous than before.

It also means that there’s no other excuse he can pull when his mother walks in on him one leg out the window and the entirety of his bed sheets tangled around his waist like a security rope.

“You could have just asked,” Jongdae’s voice filters in through the skype call and Baekhyun sags further into the folds of his blanket.

“I can’t tell my parents about Chanyeol,” he says voice muffled and small, “you know that.”

“You also can’t explain why you nearly just jumped out your window the night before your birthday without sounding completely unhinged,” Jongdae pauses, “happy birthday by the way.”

“Thanks man,” Baekhyun says sitting up on his bed as his phone vibrates on the desk. He stumbles forward only to see that the clock has hit 12am and that the stream of texts coming in is all brief birthday texts from his friends.

He scrolls through them hurriedly before sighing and tossing his phone onto the sheets.

“Nothing?” Jongdae asks, letting out a large yawn and Baekhyun can picture him stretching out like a cat.

“Nothing.” He nods out of habit even though the call is voice only.

“Do you want me to try and find him?” Jongdae asks and Baekhyun shakes his head before remembering to verbalize his response. “No, it’s fine. He’s probably not home anyways.”

Jongdae makes a short tsk sound before answering, “well, at least let me ask around. Maybe someone knows.”

He cuts the call off abruptly leaving Baekhyun alone to flop back onto his bed.

He rolls over on his blankets, cell phone in hand. Maybe Chanyeol didn’t bring his phone, and Baekhyun can picture him dumbly standing by the old oak, card and candles in hand, maybe rehearsing a song or two he wrote for Baekhyun.

He sighs, craning his head towards the clock on his wall: 12:24am

Maybe he just forgot.

Baekhyun doesn’t remember dozing off, but he does remember waking to the tapping of pebbles against his window- the very same that he nearly swan-dived out of earlier. He pulls the window open slowly, eyes still bleary from sleep. He blinks.

The area beneath his window is empty.

He pauses, quelling the surge of disappointment through him, when a pebble hits him in the face.

“Oh shit, sorry,” a voice comes from above, and Baekhyun blinks, eyes stinging in both pain and the effort to reconcile the idea of Park Chanyeol, 6ft 1 klutzy Park Chanyeol, on his roof.

“How did you get up there,” he hisses, keeping his voice low because for one he’s already grounded.

“It’s a long story,” Chanyeol replies as if that explains everything. “Need a hand up?”

He scrabbles up on to the roof to see a picnic blanket spread out on the roof tiles and Chanyeol perched on the edge of it smilinglike a bandit.

“Happy Birthday!” he sings, and Baekhyun finds himself smiling too hard to even bother quieting him down.

“I made you cupcakes,” he smiles and Baekhyun rolls his eyes good humouredly. “Liar, it says right here from Mozart’s Bakery.”

“Hey,” Chanyeol retorts, “at least I spent money on them this year!”

Baekhyun laughs in reply, licking frosting off the sugary treat. “Right, because for once Kyungsoo is too busy hanging out with other people to bail you out as your source of emergency cupcakes.”

“But they were damn good emergency cupcakes,” Chanyeol quips and he reaches into his back pocket to pull out a lighter. Baekhyun blanches.

“I swear to god,” he panics, “if you set my roof on fire.”

“I won’t,” Chanyeol says, setting the candle into the cupcake lopsidedly, “trust me.”

Baekhyun watches disbelievingly as Chanyeol flicks the lighter on, balancing between the cupcake in one hand and the lighter in the other. He places a hand on Chanyeol's shoulder just in case, because with Chanyeol you really never know.

"Make a wish," Chanyeol hums casually, butchering the tune of genie entirely.

"I made one at midnight," he smiles blowing the candle light out, "and I'm happy to inform you that you've exceeded it."

Chanyeol scoffs, mock hurt ringing in his voice. "Who do you take me for Byun Baekhyun? I even re-enacted Romeo and Juliet for you."

"That was on a balcony dumbass," Baekhyun says pulling Chanyeol forward for a kiss, "and for the record, it better not rain."
