(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 09:35 am (UTC)(link)egg tarts are good
(Anonymous) 2013-07-23 09:35 am (UTC)(link)the clock on his phone tells kris that he has fifteen minutes until he has to get to his class, which he deems just enough time to grab an egg tart and decide whether this bakery is worthy enough of his patronage.
he reaches for the handle of the door and pulls...
but it doesn't budge.
kris looks down at the sign hanging off of the handle of the door. the bakery apparently doesn't open until 10:30 on wednesdays...
which is halfway through kris's ten o'clock class.
kris sulks the rest of the way down the street.
(he doodles egg tarts in the margins of his notebook while the professor speaks about li bo and post-han poetry. they look more like inverted ufo's.)
after his class ends, kris makes it a point to shove his things haphazardly into his bag so he can hurry to the bakery. the mere temptation of egg tarts has haunted kris so persistently that his notes speak of the great tang poet dan ta as opposed to du fu, and come time for the final, kris will probably be very confused.
a few minutes later find kris standing in front of the unexpectedly cute bakery. there's a giant sticker of a smiling cupcake staring at him as he approached the front door that he didn't care to notice earlier. the cherry on top of the cupcake's frosting is also smiling.
both are incredibly unnerving.
when kris tries to open the door this time, it actually opens. suddenly, kris is assaulted by the scent of cinnamon lingering in the air and the sound of cupcake wars playing on the tv by the cash register. it feels vaguely like thanksgiving even though it's february (not that kris really celebrates thanksgiving since he's from china/canada/not the states, but this is what he imagines it would feel like).
"hi! how can i help you?" a voice pierces through kris's attempt to recreate a holiday he doesn't observe. kris looks around to see no one in line and assumes the voice must be talking him.
except he can't find the source of the voice.
oh, it's behind the cash register. that would make sense.
the boy behind the cash register is smiling at kris with a beatific grin, one prominent dimple present. kris stares at him. the boy stares back; his name tag says yixing, and kris thinks that's a really cute name that matches will with yifan and---woah, mind is moving too fast. order some egg tarts first, kris.
"uh," kris starts intelligently. yixing contines to stare at him expectantly, keeping the same happy smile on his face.
(in his mind, kris imagines a speech bubble coming from yixing that says "^^???" while his own thought bubble says ">< doki doki.")
"two egg tarts, please," kris finally orders, trying to salvage his typical aura of aplomb and suave demeanor as he watches yixing enthusiastically grab some tongs and places two delectable looking egg tarts into a small box.
"is that all?" yixing asks as he places the box next to the cash register and punches in a few numbers.
"uh, yeah."
"that'll be $1.80!"
kris fishes into his back pocket for his wallet and produces two crumbled dollar bills. these egg tarts are slightly more expensive than the ones in chinatown, but then again, everything on campus is more expensive than chinatown. when yixing hands him his change and his little box of happiness, kris drops the two dimes into the tip jar.
which he never does.
but what's the use of twenty cents anyway?
"thank you! come again," yixing says cheerfully, brightening at the sound of coins against glass, and kris nods awkwardly before shuffling out of the bakery.
(the egg tarts are perfect. 10/10 would recommend.)
the next morning, kris stops by the bakery right before his eleven o'clock oceanography class.
yixing isn't behind the register.
instead, it's some sleepy kid who jumps awake at the sound of the door opening.
"two egg tarts," kris orders dejectedly, as if he had just witnessed a dog get hit by a car. the sleepy kid doesn't notice and hands him his box.
"$1.80."
kris pays and doesn't leave the tip. (what if he needs those twenty cents for lunch?)
"egg tarts?" lu han perks up as kris slides into the seat next to him. "how did you get time to go to chinatown?"
"i didn't," kris grumbles, dragging out his laptop. "there's a new bakery by the burger place." kris sighs before he munches on his egg tart.
"wow, i don't think i've ever seen someone so sad to eat an egg tart. is it not good or something?" lu han asks as he steals the egg tart without bothering to hear the answer.
"it's perfect," kris responds, trying to sound as stoic and serious as one can about egg tarts. instead, he sounds more like a lovesick teenager watching his crush laughing and being so perfectly happy without him. lu han hums in agreement as he finishes his egg tart in one bite and doesn't ask anymore questions.
"hi! how can i help you?" a familiar voice asks when kris comes in on friday. kris's day is suddenly ten times better as he feels some strange warm feeling rumble in his stomach.
maybe it's hunger.
maybe it's lov--no. it's hunger.
"would you be interested in trying our new red velvet cupcake?" yixing asks before kris can answer.
"uh. sure." kris doesn't really like cupcakes, but for yixing he will make an exception.
this is so ridiculous, a voice in kris's head that sounds suspiciously like lu han giggles. stop pining and ask for his phone number or something.
"i'm not pining."
"what?" yixing asks, poking his head up from the glass display as his tongs are poised to grab the cupcake.
"uh, i mean, i don't need a box." which sounds nothing like "i'm not pining" but yixing seems to believe him anyway.
"okay!" yixing places the cupcake in the palm of his plastic glove covered hand before handing it to kris. with his other, uncovered hand, yixing presses buttons on the cash register and recites, "$3.50."
kris fumbles around for a five dollar bill and leaves the change in the jar again.
"thank you, come again!"
and kris does.
(the cupcake is nice and moisty but the cream cheese icing is a little too heavy. 8/10. which is pretty legendary by kris wu's standards.)
kris continues to visit the bakery at around eleven almost every day and notices that his visits coincide with yixing's shift on mondays, wednesdays, and fridays. it's been three weeks since he first visits and
"you seriously still don't have the balls to ask this egg tart guy out or something?" kris's roommate chanyeol snorts unattractively from his bed.
"bakery guy," kris corrects as he attempts to write an essay about ban zhao's lessons for women.
"does he even know your name?" chanyeol asks as he rolls onto his stomach. kris thinks he should be studying for a class or something and not interrogating kris about his inability to ask yixing anything besides about daily specials.. chanyeol obviously disagrees.
"...i don't know."
"so no."
"yeah."
"you are hopeless."
"screw you, chanyeol."
