(Anonymous) 2013-07-31 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)His friends beg to differ.
"Are there any ghosts here right now?" his friend Jongdae asks today (and every day) while they grab lunch together between classes. Kyungsoo had told Jongdae about his "little problem" two months ago when Jongdae had caught him a few too many times talking to people who weren't actually there. It had gone over well, better than Kyungsoo could ever have expected, but now he has to deal with Jongdae constantly questioning him about the ghosts in the room and asking him about the legitimacy of Ghost Hunters. Sometimes, Kyungsoo finds himself making shit up just to entertain himself.
Kyungsoo sighs, as he is very wont to do whenever he spends time with Kim Jongdae. "Yes. Ghosts are everywhere—I can't fucking escape them."
"Whoa, there. Is everything okay? You're not usually so—bitter about the ghost thing."
Kyungsoo scoffs. In reality, he is always bitter about the ghost thing. He just does a very good job of pretending he isn't because the ghosts don't get angry that way, and he doesn't have to deal with his friends pity about how difficult it must be, even as they grill him about the cool details. But today he is a tad more bitter than usual, he'll admit. "Yeah, I just got rid of a particularly clingy ghost yesterday, but I think there's already another one following me."
"You think?" Jongdae says, and looks around the restaurant they're in as if he would be able to see who Kyungsoo's talking about. He always does that, and Kyungsoo thinks he has some vague hope he'll one day start to see ghosts too.
"Yeah, I keep catching a glimpse of a guy, but he always disappears before approaching me. He must be shy."
Jongdae laughs. "Ha, a shy ghost. What do they even have to be shy about?"
"Ghosts are people too, Jongdae. Or, like, used to be—you know what I mean. They have feelings." Kyungsoo had thought the same way as Jongdae when he'd first starting seeing ghosts. He'd figured all ghosts would be the same: wandering aimlessly, emotionless, only trying to get to the other side where they belonged. He learned quickly enough how wrong he was. Ghosts are just like humans—were humans once, after all, and they still feel, and love, and many don't want to leave the only place they've ever known.
Kyungsoo can see that Jongdae doesn't quite understand, but he nods anyway. "So what are you going to do about this guy? Turn him away?"
"Well, he has to approach me first. Then we'll see." Though, Kyungsoo knows he'll never be able to turn away a ghost in need, as much as he hates to admit it to himself.
"He's got plenty of time to gather the courage," Jongdae jokes, and Kyungsoo laughs along, but is grateful when Jongdae moves the conversation along to their Calculus II homework instead. "Could you believe some of those problems?"
*
The guy doesn't wait too long, deciding to show himself the next day, but Kyungsoo almost misses it when he does.
When a person first becomes a ghost, they still look like a person, are still opaque and able to touch and feel objects. It isn't until later that they fade, become transparent, lose the sense of touch and gain the ability to walk through walls, or whatever they decide they want to do. Kyungsoo is an expert, has been seeing ghosts for a very long time, and is usually able to discern a ghost from a real person, no matter how they look.
This time, however, he's a little distracted.
"Chanyeol?" Kyungsoo exclaims, when he opens his front door only to find his ex-boyfriend standing there. "What the hell are you doing here?"
Chanyeol pouts, and Kyungsoo feels like he's back in high school with how familiar this all feels. "You're not happy to see me?"
"I'm sorry, I just—wasn't expecting you. It's been years since I've last seen you. Please come in." Kyungsoo takes a step back into his apartment and waits for Chanyeol to follow him in. He doesn't. "Chanyeol? Aren't you going to come in?"
"I can't," Chanyeol says, looking sheepish.
Kyungsoo sees Chanyeol isn't any easier to understand than he was three years ago. "Okay, and why not?"
Chanyeol takes a hesitant step forward only to be thrown backward as soon as his foot crosses the threshold, and Kyungsoo gapes because— "Because you have protections that ward off ghosts."
*
It takes Kyungsoo about ten minutes to get sufficiently calmed down enough to let Chanyeol actually enter his apartment, but even then he can't stop muttering, "oh my god," every ten seconds.
He sits on the couch in his living room with Chanyeol next to him and takes a deep breath. "So. You're a ghost," he starts. He thinks that is a good place to start. "How did you find me?"
"Hey, aren't you sad? I'm dead!" Chanyeol exclaims, grabbing onto Kyungsoo's arm and pouting.
"Of course I'm sad. It's just—you're right here, so I'm finding it difficult to mourn."
Chanyeol leans back and sighs. "Right, well, after I died—just a couple of days ago, actually, if you're curious—I ran into another ghost and she told me there are people who can help us be, like, not ghosts anymore, you know? She mentioned you, and I thought no way could it actually be you, but then I followed you for a couple days and it was. You look good, by the way."
"You too. You know, considering."
Chanyeol laughs, and Kyungsoo finds it comforting—things really haven't changed much since high school. Even with one of them dead (though Kyungsoo is trying not to think about that), they can fall so easily back into the same rhythm: Kyungsoo telling deadpan jokes and Chanyeol laughing even if it's not funny. He always thought Kyungsoo was the funniest person in the room. Kyungsoo always felt something warm erupt in his chest when he saw Chanyeol's bright smile, caused by him and only for him. He's feeling it now, too, but tries to tamp it down. This is bad. His Chanyeol problem is even worse than his ghost problem, and just as annoying.
"So you want me to help you move on to the other side?" Kyungsoo asks, and Chanyeol nods enthusiastically. Kyungsoo can't help but crack a smile at the way his brown mop of hair flops around on his head and his eye slightly twitches. "I don't know, Chanyeol. It seems like a conflict of interest or something—maybe I can find someone else for you."
He immediately shakes his head. "No way. I only trust you." Kyungsoo's heart clenches. "Besides, where's the conflict of interest? It's not like you still have feelings for me."
"Right." Kyungsoo chokes out a laugh. "Of course not."
