one more just in case the game resumes. i didn't get inspired to write anything for fifth year, unfortunately. or like anything action related. but i kind of really want to read the story of kim jongin, the boy who lived, now.

it's joonmyun sitting at the staff table. zitao makes a noise like he's been kicked, and can't stop staring all through the feast.

"what's he doing here?" jongin says, low and furious.

"he needed a job," zitao says.

"so why not work at st. mungo's? why come back here?"

"he loves hogwarts, too," zitao says. "just like us."

"he's up to something," jongin insists, and storms off.

he knows how relieved jongin had been after he graduated--joonmyun had never been able to pretend with jongin, too resentful of jongin for getting everything joonmyun himself had ever wanted, seemingly without trying. jongin's going to take a long time to reconcile himself to the idea of joonmyun being back at school, if he ever does. if he isn't right about there being another reason for joonmyun's return. sehun wonders what's under joonmyun's sleeves.

sehun grabs zitao's arm before he can follow. this isn't really something he wants to get in the middle of, not when his own feelings are so complicated. "you--you can't be loyal to both of them," he says haltingly.

"it's joonmyun," zitao says, like it's that simple. "someone has to try."

he shoulders his way past sehun to his own dorm room, and sehun sighs. it's going to be a long year.

"what happened?" jongin asks, sitting up slowly.

"love potion," sehun explains, and jongin freezes. "from shae zhang."

"from--really? i wouldn't have thought she'd..."

sehun frowns. "you don't like her on your own, do you?"

"no! i like--i mean. no." jongin looks away fast, flushing. "i definitely don't like shae."

"okay," sehun says slowly. "neither does anyone else." he pauses. "so who do you like?" there's an ache in his chest. watching jongin pine after krystal in fourth and fifth year had been bad enough. ever since sehun's been kind of hoping that jongin will just never like anyone ever again. but apparently he does, and he hasn't said a word to sehun.

"i can't tell you," jongin mutters, staring down at his hands.

"why not?" sehun asks, trying hard to sound normal. he'd tease zitao about something like this. if he doesn't with jongin, it'll seem weird. "i'm your best friend, and it's valentine's day. when better?"

jongin keeps shaking his head.

"is jongin okay?" kyungsoo asks when sehun meets him back in the common room.

"he's fine," sehun says vaguely.

"are you okay?"

"i don't know." sehun licks his lips, considers keeping quiet, but the whole thing's too strange and he's too irritated. since when does jongin keep secrets from him? "he likes someone, and he won't tell me. which is weird, right? he's my best friend, he should tell me who it is."

kyungsoo doesn't say anything for a few seconds, just looks at him with this small, strange smile on his face that sehun can't really read. then, "i think we should break up," he says.

sehun stares. "what? why?"

kyungsoo sighs. "because i don't want to be anyone's second choice," he says, and sehun feels himself turning as red as jongin had earlier.

sehun wakes up before anyone on his birthday. it's a few hours before jongin finds him up in the astronomy tower, staring out over at the lake, overwhelmed.

"i don't have to go back to them," sehun says in wonder. he's been waiting for this day for years, ever since his parents had been willing to let him die to bring tom riddle back, or maybe before. ever since voldemort's return, when sehun's been stuck pretending to be the dutiful son, reporting back lies and half-truths so that his family won't realize he's friends with jongin in truth. "i'm seventeen. i don't--i can choose."

"choose what?" jongin asks.

his best friend is an idiot, sehun thinks, an idiot and the best person he's ever known. "you," sehun tells him, and somehow right then it's the easiest thing in the world to close the distance between them and kiss him. jongin's kind of a terrible kisser, he discovers, but that's okay. sehun can teach him.

"we'll leave after lu han and minseok's wedding," zitao says, and the other two both jump. he's barely said two words since dumbledore's death, since joonmyun fled. sehun's caught him crying a couple of times, curled up with him until zitao calmed down. he wonders if more happened between those two this year than zitao had said, but he's not going to ask, not now.

"we?" jongin echoes.

sehun nods. "we're going with you."

jongin tries to argue; he has to, sehun knows that. he's too noble for his own good, sehun thinks fondly. but neither sehun nor zitao is going to give in, and jongin eventually gives up.

"thank you," jongin says at last, and all three sit in silence for awhile, gripping each other's hands and staring out over the school they may never see again.
