The first time Kai meets Suho, it’s in the middle of the woods and Suho is attempting to fend off wild Pokémon with a Magikarp. “Are you going to be alright, traveling like this?” Kai asks, watching as the Magikarp flails on the ground. Next to him, his Umbreon stares on in contempt. “I have some Repels, if you need them.”

“No, that’s alright, we’re fine,” Suho says cheerfully. “But that’s really nice of you to offer.”

It’s not that I’m nice, Kai wants to say, I just feel this strange sense of pity looking at you. “If you’re sure,” he says.

“Positive. But, if you’re traveling through the forest too, we could go together,” Suho offers, smiling widely.

Kai doesn’t particularly want to set out on an escort mission to get some weirdo who thinks a Magikarp is a useful Pokémon, but he takes a look at the fish drooping on the dirt and Suho’s hopeful expression and he caves. “Okay,” he agrees, thinking to himself that he is definitely going to regret it.

“Just wondering, but that’s not the only Pokémon you have, is it?” Kai asks, watching on while Suho sprays his Magikarp with a Potion. After every wild Pokémon encounter, they have to stop and wait for Suho to heal the Magikarp back up to full health, and Kai doesn’t think he can hide his impatience for much longer.

“I have a Feebas, too!” Suho informs him cheerfully.

Kai blinks a few times. “Feebas...?” he asks, before pulling out his PokéDex and looking up the entry on Feebas: It is a shabby and ugly Pokémon. However, it is very hardy and can survive on little water. It eats anything, so it can even live in polluted streams and lakes. No one pays any attention to it.

His jaw drops. “Literally all his Pokémon are useless,” he mutters to his Umbreon. “How did this guy survive for so long?” The Umbreon makes a sound between a mew and a hiss, but Kai can sense that his exasperation is mutual anyway.

“I’m done healing him now,” Suho says, grinning and giving Kai a thumbs-up. “Okay, should we keep going now?”

He and his Umbreon exchange looks. “Uh, yeah, sure. Let’s keep going,” he says.

The sun sets, and they set up camp. While Kai pitches the tents, Suho begins cooking dinner. “Suho, why don’t you evolve your Magikarp into a Gyarados? Then it would be really powerful,” he says. “It’s at a high enough level that you could, isn’t it?”

“Hmm. Well, I guess I just don’t want to,” Suho says, stirring at a pot over the campfire.

Is this some sort of insane troll logic or...? Kai thinks to himself desperately. “But Magikarp’s stats are so... you know... they’re terrible,” he points out.

“But it’s really cute! I’ll evolve it when we’re both good and ready to,” Suho replies, cracking a smile.

There are so many arguments that Kai wants to make about why it’s illogical to keep the Magikarp unevolved just because it’s cuter, but he takes a few deep breaths and reminds himself that it shouldn’t really matter to him whether or not the stupid fish evolves or not. “Well... I guess as long as you’re okay with that,” he says evenly.

“Yep,” Suho says cheerfully. “The soup’s done cooking, by the way. I hope you enjoy it.”

The only positive that comes with traveling with Suho, Kai thinks, is that there is a significant improvement in the quality of dinner.

They make it through the woods in four days, even though it should’ve been a two-day trip. “Thank you for coming with me,” Suho says. “I really appreciate it.”

You should, because I think you’d be dead if I hadn’t, Kai wants to say. Instead, he shrugs and says, “You should catch something that isn’t a Water-type. What if you have to fight off a Grass-type or Electric-type or something?”

“No, I like Water-types. I want to become a Water-type expert,” Suho replies, smiling.

“You don’t care about type advantages?” Kai asks, trying not to stare in disbelief too hard.

“I’m of the school that you should train whatever Pokémon you want to train,” Suho answers. “Type advantages aren’t everything.”

Kai half-smiles. “Well, still. Think about it.”

“I will,” Suho says cheerfully. “Anyway, I guess we’re parting here, right? It really was a pleasure to travel with you. I hope we meet again someday.”

“Sure,” Kai replies, even though he kind of hopes they don’t.

The second time Kai meets Suho, it’s at the Pokémon League -- he’s just beaten three of the Elite Four, and is two battles away from claiming Championship over the entire region. “We can do this,” he says to his Umbreon, which purrs in agreement.

He pushes the door open, and is greeted by water and sand. “Oh, Kai!” he hears somebody call out -- he turns around. It’s Suho, standing there with the same dumb smile he remembers from before.

Kai feels his jaw drop. “Suho?” he says.

“I thought I’d see you here someday,” Suho replies, either ignoring or oblivious to Kai’s expression of complete shock. “Back when we first met, you struck me as the kind of Trainer who would go far.”

“You can’t be serious. You’re an Elite Four member?” Kai asks.

Suho smiles. “As the final Elite Four member, I would be honored to accept your challenge to a battle!” he says, and calls out his first Pokémon.

Kai loses. “No,” he says, slumping onto his knees. “I can’t believe this. You... beat me?”

“It was a wonderful battle,” Suho replies, holding out a hand. “You should be very proud of your team.”

“I lost,” he mutters, too shell-shocked to accept the handshake.

Suho’s smile falters for a moment, but then he pats Kai’s shoulder. “You wanted to be Champion that badly, huh?” he asks.

“Doesn’t everybody, who makes it this far?” he replies, not bothering to hide his bitterness.

“A few years ago, I challenged the Champion,” Suho says. “And I lost.”

Kai doesn’t reply. Is that supposed to make me feel better? he wonders to himself. Suho continues: “But becoming the Champion isn’t the only worthwhile job in the world. I became an Elite Four member, and I’ve enjoyed that.”

“Thanks for the pep talk, I guess,” he says blankly. He looks around the room, trying his best not to meet Suho’s gaze as he starts trying to leave -- “Where’s the exit?”

“What do you think about the idea of joining the Elite Four?” Suho asks.

Kai had thought nothing would make him reconsider leaving as soon as possible. He was wrong.

When the year ends, Kai becomes part of the Elite Four. “You replaced our oldest member, so I’m the most senior now,” Suho tells him, sounding almost a little too proud of himself.

Kai snorts. “To think that you’re the guy I first met in a forest trying to fend off Gloom and Petilil with a Magikarp,” he says.

“I evolved him two days after that, actually,” Suho replies, smiling slightly. “I thought you had a point. It was about time.”

He thinks about the Gyarados that had taken out almost half his team single-handedly and almost regrets encouraging Suho to evolve it. “I see,” he says.

Suho smiles and extends his hand. “Allow me to officially welcome you to the Elite Four, Kai,” he says. And this time, Kai takes it.
