(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)"Assholes," Baekhyun whispers in Jongin's ear. "Come on. It's not as though he was being completely silent."
The man's soul rises from his crumpled body and looks around in confusion for a moment before he notices what's lying at his feet. He almost shrieks—then Baekhyun greets him and he definitely shrieks, face purpling with surprise.
"Calm down," Baekhyun says, yawning a little. "Not so loud, yeah? Couldn't be bothered to finish chewing before you swallowed the whole fucking thing, stick and all?" Out of the corner of his eye he sees the color drain from Jongin's face.
"I—I—who are you?" the man stutters. "Devil!"
Baekhyun grins. "I wish. No, just a Reaper in eyeliner. This is my trainee." He jerks his thumb in Jongin's direction. "Go easy. You're his first."
Choker blinks. "First?"
"Soul. Welcome to the afterlife," Baekhyun intones in a deep voice, wiggling his fingers like he's telling a scary story. "Or, at least, the gateway to. I don't know what's waiting for you—but I wouldn't worry too much about it either way. Can't be much worse than choking to death on some fried shit." He tips his head. "Was it good? Should we get some before we leave? I'm always—I don't know, I like the stalls I like. I'm always afraid to try somewhere new." He grins. "Routine and all that."
"Y—yes?" Choker squeaks, eyes wide.
Baekhyun looks at his watch. "Oh, look at the time." He looks up. "Safe travels, pal. Godspeed. Or something." His wrist flicks impatiently. "Go! Go on! Turn around! Eternity lies that way."
Choker nods, totters away numbly. Baekhyun opens his mouth like he's going to say something else but the soul disappears in a flash of light and it's just the two of them again, standing to the side. Jongin swallows heavily and turns to Baekhyun, eyes frightened.
"I want to—I want to go home," he murmurs, tugging at Baekhyun's sleeve. "Just—you know, for a minute. Before I forget everyone."
Baekhyun's heart lurches. He feels for the kid—really, he does, but there's no way around this particular set of guidelines. "Jongin—" he breaks off, sighing. "It's against the rules. Causes all sorts of weird paradoxes."
"You just told me that the living see a different face—you said they forget," Jongin says, voice rising a little hysterically. "I just—my mom—"
Baekhyun clasps Jongin's hand, pulls him away from the storefront. "Hey. Come on. You did a good job today." He slings an arm around Jongin's neck, bounced up on his toes to get the extra few inches. "I'll buy you dinner. You earned it."
Baekhyun feels like he's babysitting a little bit when he spends twenty minutes coaxing Jongin to get to sleep. The kid's still anxious from the reaping earlier that evening, keeps thrashing under the sheets to look at the glowing face of his watch.
"Stop," Baekhyun hisses. "You won't miss it. They're not going to pile on the workload just yet. You've still got your training wheels."
Jongin whimpers into his pillow. "This is awful."
"It'll be better tomorrow. Go to sleep."
When Jongin's finally asleep, Baekhyun leaves the bedroom and trails down the stairs. The kitchen light's still on. Chanyeol's hovering in front of the open fridge, dim yellow light slicing past the dark outline of his tall body. He turns when he hears Baekhyun shuffle in.
"Hey. How'd today go?"
Baekhyun shrugs, stifling a yawn in the sleeve of his sweatshirt. "Could've been worse, I guess."
"Could've been like your first time, you mean?" Chanyeol laughs and pulls a pitcher of juice from the fridge. "I've never seen anyone puke so hard in my life—and I made it through three years of university before I bit the dust."
"Yeah. Hey—Chanyeol. Do you remember anything about what happened in your last life?"
"No. Isn't that the point?" Chanyeol shakes his head and tips his head back to take a drink directly from the spout of the pitcher. Baekhyun's nose scrunches in disgust—he's grossed out, but not so grossed out that he's going to bother telling him to stop. "I'm glad I don't remember. I think it'd really fuck me up if I had to reap someone I knew."
"You were friends with a lot of dogs, Chanyeol?" Baekhyun wiggles his eyebrows. "Maybe that explains why you drool so much."
Chanyeol rolls his eyes. "You know what I mean. Wouldn't it be fucking awful to have to reap your parents? Your family?"
"Yeah." Baekhyun heaves a loud sigh. "I just feel really bad. Jongin's pretty homesick—he's just a kid—"
"He's not a kid. He's a Reaper." Chanyeol offers the juice to Baekhyun who shakes his head. He shrugs and takes another swig. "Look. You were the last addition in this district, but trust me—it's always like this. This time next week he'll be making jokes about bouncing skulls and drinking all the milk."
"You think?"
"Yeah, I do." He offers Baekhyun a smile, the same broad, gleaming one that'd greeted Baekhyun first-thing on the other side. "Don't worry, you're doing fine. He'll get the hang out it."
"Maybe you should do it—I turned out alright, didn't I?"
Chanyeol nearly snorts juice through his nose. "How are we defining alright in this scenario? Because you're a special breed of fucked up, Baekhyun—I've never seen anyone primp so much in the fucking mirror before a reap. It's not a fucking date—"
"Hey. Just because we're dead doesn't mean we all need to let our appearances go. You're always coming back here covered in hair and slobber and whatever the fuck else—"
"Alright, the nature of my assignments is not the point here."
"And what is the point, then?"
Somewhere deep within the house, a phone rings. They both freeze: it's the hotline. It usually only rings during regular business hours—a late night call means something's seriously wrong.
Somebody's being summoned to HQ.
The ringing cuts abruptly and the silence that settles in the house sets Baekhyun's teeth on edge, the hair on the back of his neck standing on end.
Baekhyun lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding. "Do you think that's about Jongin?"
"Couldn't be anything else," Chanyeol whispers. He reaches out and squeezes Baekhyun's hand.
