(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)"the fire sages have called you," his mother had said, her eyes watering from pride and sheer happiness. "do well, my son."
jongdeok had given him a punch on the shoulder as a farewell gift. "my brother the avatar, huh. have fun, runt."
jongdae wrapped his hand around jongdeok's fist and sent a stream of sparks down his arm.
"ow, that hurt! jongdeok jumped, the static making his hair stand on end. "benders. i'll be glad to rid of you, kid."
jongdae was pretty sure he'd seen a tear slide down jongdeok's cheek when the carriage pulled him away.
now he finds himself in a large, empty room, sitting crossed-legged in between two other kids. one had a creepy serial killer smile on his face, while the other was of undeterminable gender and seemed to be more interested in the intricate architecture of the fire temple than anything else.
the door opened, and a wrinkly man with a large hat stepped through, flanked by a set of wrinkly men and women in less impressive robes and hats. jongdae assumed he was the head fire sage.
"children," his voice was unexpectedly loud and charistmatic. "the prophecy has been announced. a child who turns sixteen in autumn and who displays an undeniable love and talent for bending, especially of the less common forms." his eyes flit between the three of them, and jongdae's heart thrummed with excitement and nerves. he wanted to be the avatar. he could feel that he was, from the energy inside him and the many cases in which he had accidentally bended an element that was not fire.
"we have narrowed down all the autumn children born in the year the previous avatar passed to the three of you," he turned to serial killer smile. "park chanyeol of the honourable phoenix house, top of the royal academy," then a nod at jongdae. "kim jongdae, master of lightning at the age of ten," finally, the girl (guy?) on jongdae's right. "liu amber, youngest sergeant in the royal army."
it's hard not to feel a little tiny in between two overachievers.
but then again jongdae is the avatar, so there was no need to belittle himself.
"we will be doing a series of tests to see if either of you carry an affinity for the other elements the way the avatar does," he narrows his eyes at jongdae. "however if you believe you can show that you are, indeed, the avatar, then by all means."
jongdae wastes no time hopping to his feet. he takes a step forward, bows, then assumes the stance zitao had taught him.
then he takes a deep breath and airbends.
the gust of wind that flows out with his energy through his palms never fails to amaze him. he could tell that fire sages were amazed too, bowing deeply in respect.
"no, i-" jongdae begins, overwhelmed by the sudden display.
"it would be an honour to serve you, avatar jongdae," the head sage says, jis voice filled with reverence.
chanyeol and amber are bowing too. taking a deep breath and trying to dispel the warm red tinge that's probably spread all the way to the tips of his ears, jongdae bows deeply back.
"it would be an honour to serve everyone as the avatar," his voice shakes a little, but he means every single word.
*
avatar training started almost immediately. the fire sages put him through a series of tests to see his prowess in firebending.
it takes him only one battle (with liu amber the youngest sergeant in the royal army, which he wins, but barely) before he is chastised by the fire sages.
"you rely too much on lightning," one says.
jongdae kicks at a stray rock. "but i'm more comfortable with it."
he's met with multiple glares from wrinkled faces. "we want to assess your firebending abilities. it would be a little difficult for us to do so if all you are bending is lightning."
*
they make him battle with park chanyeol next, banning him from using more than two lightning attacks.
park chanyeol wins.
*
jongdae escapes from the temple a week later, and sneaks into baekhyun's house through his bedroom window when he knows his parents aren't in.
"oh spirits, you scared me," baekhyun clutches at his chest. "couldn't you have knocked on the front door? like a normal person?"
jongdae punches him on the shoulder, glad to finally see his best friend again. "can't you treat the avatar with reverence and respect? like a normal person?"
baekhyun snorts. "please, jongdae, you're probably the only avatar who had to start from basic bending in their own element at sixteen. you're not worthy of public displays of reverence and respect," he punches jongdae back.
"what," jongdae bites out, sad and confused and a little upset. "the public knows i'm doing remedial firebending?"
"oh wipe that kicked puppy look off your face," baekhyun runs a hand down jongdae's face. "your family came over a few nights ago and your brother told us everything."
jongdae curses under his breath. of course jongdeok would.
"clean your mouth, jongdae," baekhyun tuts. "the avatar isn't supposed to curse."
*
the fire sages declare jongdae a firebending master a month later. customary to longstanding tradition, a huge ceremony is thrown to unveil the avatar to the nation. jongdae's put into heavy robes and asked to sit in a box so that they can carry him into the square, but he refuses, the royal treatment making him uncomfortable.
"just a normal carriage will do," he insists. "i'm really heavy, so it'll be quite a struggle to carry me. let the horses do it instead." he says this in his most authoritative voice, crafted from his days in the fire temple.
"of course, avatar jongdae," the fire sage bows low, then scurries away.
*
the square is packed full with people cheering for their new avatar. it is only then that jongdae begins to feel the immense burden that is his responsibility - not only to his nation, but also to the entire world. his hands shake a little as he makes his way up to the balcony flanked by the fire sages, but he stuffs them into the pockets of his robes and takes a deep breath.
"it is my honour to present to you your avatar: avatar jongdae!"
jongdae steps forward. the sun is blinding in his eyes and the crowd below cheers his name. he swallows the lump in his throat and grins as widely as he can.
"hi everyone," he says, waving a little sheepishly. they'd run through his lines back at the temple. he was supposed to address them as people of the fire nation, and any other who have travelled from further lands, but jongdae felt that it wasn't him to say something like that.
"my name is kim jongdae," he takes a deep breath. "and i am your avatar."
the cheers and smiles from all the many people in the crowd warm his heart. he lets them cheer for a while, then.
"it will be an honour to serve you as your avatar, and i hope that you will be able to rely on me in the near future if the need arises. thank you," he finishes off with a deep bow before the fire sages can prompt the crowd to bow to him.
he can tell the head sage is a little annoyed at how jongdae's disregarded whatever they had practiced, but there is a pat on his head and he knows it doesn't matter anyway.
