Re: hg: the devil never dies (team xiulay)
(Anonymous) 2013-08-08 03:07 am (UTC)(link)Minseok goes out of his way to avoid situations in which he could die. He drops out of his sports clubs and joins the book club instead. He hangs back on train platforms and walks briskly (but doesn't run) at street crossings. Elevators are a big no, so he takes the stairs even when his small apartment puts him on the sixth floor of his building. His choices don't keep him entirely safe. When he's lucky, he dies in his apartment, though the frequency of his deaths is a sign that he's definitely not lucky. A skull cracked too hard on bathroom tile, electrocuted by a faulty phone charger, crushed by a fallen bookshelf (that one had been hard to clean up). But one day, he trips on his way down the stairs and breaks his neck. Another tenant finds him, skin cool and neck bent at an awkward angle, just before he comes back to life. The woman screams when he sits up, the bones of his neck cracking awkwardly back into place.
"I, um, I got drunk and fell asleep," he offers by way of explanation. She isn't convinced.
He moves out a few days later, a part of his savings carved out by breaking his lease. He's tempted to drop out of school and hole up in his new, smaller apartment, but he knows he'd eventually need to get a job to sustain himself. Even if he let himself stay in bed forever, he wouldn't die. The second best thing he can do is make himself invisible. He doesn't speak in class, he doesn't have any friends left and he spends his breaks alone. It goes more smoothly than Minseok expected.
Until Kris.
Kris transfers in about a month after Minseok brains himself on the edge of his desk. He's very tall, taller than Chanyeol who sometimes waves at Minseok in the library, and he sits in front of Minseok in class. Kris is on the basketball team. Kris speaks English. Kris speaks Mandarin and Cantonese. Kris is admired by many of the girls. Kris becomes close to Lu Han, who used to be close to Minseok. Kris is very polite. All of these things are things Minseok doesn't mind.
Kris is no shorter when he sits. As a result, Minseok spends a majority of his time leaning into the aisle to see the notes on the blackboard. He refuses to ask the teacher to change seats and he doesn't ask Kris to crouch either. His back aches a little but leaning around Kris works for about two weeks. It's a Friday when he falls off his chair and hits his head on the floor. It's not fatal, he can tell, but darkness creeps in at the edges of his vision and Kris is staring at him and he kind of wishes it was.
He wakes up in the infirmary with a headache and a very concerned Kris sitting at his bedside.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Minseok replies. He tries to sit up but his head spins and Kris pushes him down with very large hands. They're huge, Minseok's brain supplies, inhumanly so. "Are you a monster too?"
"What?" Kris asks, eyebrows furrowing. He looks angry but he sounds more concerned than offended. "Should I get the nurse?"
"No," Minseok says firmly. "You're like me, aren't you?"
Kris withdraws his hands and watches Minseok, a spark of curiosity sneaking into his gaze, but he doesn't continue their conversation. He simply sits there. They stare at each other for about five minutes, in complete silence. The fog over Minseok's thoughts lifts gradually and it's only when he's fully aware that he realises Kris' pupils aren't round. They've contracted into thin slits. Reptilian.
"You're a different monster, huh?" Minseok sighs, rubbing his face tiredly.
Kris blinks and his pupils are normal once more, the way they are when he's placating girls or talking to Lu Han or reading in English class or... "I thought you already knew. You've been watching me."
Minseok sits up, slowly this time, and Kris lets him. "You're tall."
Much to Minseok's surprise, Kris laughs. Minseok's lips twitch and he realises he's smiling. He thinks he might have forgotten what it felt like, if the strain in his cheeks is anything to go by.
"I can't see past you in class," he continues, "because of your height."
"You should have said so," Kris laughs, showing his gums. Minseok thinks it's kind of ugly but endearing anyway.
Minseok shrugs. The smile won't fade, even though he has no reason to be so happy. "I don't talk to others much."
"I heard. Lu Han said you were on the football team together but then you quit. He said you were in an accident but he didn't say anything else."
Minseok sobers up and Kris settles down again, watching him expectantly. Once he's made sure the nurse isn't paying them any attention, Minseok speaks. "My family died. My parents and my little sister. I was there too. There was a piece of metal, speared me right through the side. It hit a lot of vital organs. And my ribs were broken, one of my lungs got pierced. I died. But I didn't really die. I woke up and I could see the metal and I could feel it inside me, stabbing. I felt everything." He pauses. "Once a bookcase fell on me. I was crushed and I woke up still stuck under there. There was..." He shudders and shakes the memory off with a physical shake of the head that leaves him slightly woozy. "What are you?"
"I can transform," Kris says, picking up on the hint though that same concerned crease between the eyebrows is present again. "Into a dragon. Sort of."
"Sort of?"
"Sort of." Kris stands and Minseok scowls, staring straight at the buckle of Kris' belt. "I have to go back to class. You should stay here, just in case."
Minseok lies down and thinks about what Kris means by "sort of".
