(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 10:29 am (UTC)(link)They had met amidst stacks of boxes and rented helpers from a relocation firm carrying said boxes up the stairs to what would be the Lu's new home. Yixing, living next door, had come out to greet the new neighbours and, with his incorrigible charity streak, soon found himself helping to move boxes. All of Lu Han's mother's attempts to tell Yixing that it really wasn't necessary and “wouldn't you rather take our Lu Han out and show him the area?” were met with a bright smile that let Yixing's trademark dimple dip his cheek and the reassurance that he really didn't mind. So the boys carried Lu Han's stuff up into his new room together where the furniture was already assembled, shelves and wardrobe just waiting to be filled with his belongings.
When Lu Han opened the boxes, he had been wary that Yixing would mock his taste of music. It wouldn't have been the first time. But instead, they had clicked instantly, bonding over the Korean pop CDs that emerged in a great number since Yixing also liked Korean pop, on top of Mandopop and a few Japanese bands. Within a few hours, they became so comfortable around each other that Lu Han bragged loudly about owning the whole TVXQ discography. Yixing countered that he had all of SHINee's and this was what originally started the friendly rivalry between them. (To this day, Lu Han still claims that he won this very first competition because even though both owned the whole compilation, TVXQ had released more CDs so he should naturally be the winner.)
On the next school day, they discovered that they were in the same class, despite Lu Han being a year older. But they had a different curriculum here in Changsha, so he had to repeat one year. Lu Han almost didn't trust his eyes when he, after bowing and introducing himself to his new classmates, surveyed their faces and unexpectedly found a familiar one amongst them – Yixing. The uneasiness of not knowing a single person in the room lifted from him and he broke into a bright, relieved smile. It was as if fate had meant for them to become friends.
They became close fast. Having Yixing by his side on the walk to and home from school, throwing notes with funny little scribbles on his desk in class, sitting with him and a few of his friends at lunch, all these things helped ease Lu Han's longing for his old home, fought off the emptiness that sometimes gnawed at him when he missed his Beijing friends. Most of all, he loved spending time with Yixing alone, either in his room or in Lu Han's, talking in between doing homework, always with pop music playing in the background. He might have lost a father, but he gained a brother. (And he didn't dislike this bargain, a loving brother, he thought, was much better than a violent father.)
Perhaps it was because they always spent time together, doing homework together, cramming for exams together, they always had almost identical grades. And as with most things, from CDs to the length of time they could hold a note, to the number of girls they had snogged (so far, the score on that one was 0:0), their academic records became a friendly but no less fierce competition between them. They even kept a list of their achievements, a spreadsheet meticulously drawn to record the winner of each category. When Lu Han saw his number of wins dwindling, he came up with ridiculous challenges (“Hey Yixing, I bet I can hold more boba pearls in my mouth than you!” - He did, but almost choked to death) or slyly tried to influence the setting to his advantage (“Hey Yixing, I bet I can eat more meat balls than you!” - He did, but only because he dunked them all in extra spicy sauce so that Yixing gave up after five and almost broke into tears at the burning in his mouth while Lu Han munched on as if he didn't have taste buds).
Being the good-natured person that he was, all of Lu Han's antics didn't bring Yixing out of his calm, he just laughed, accepted his defeats and recorded his wins with silent gloating that had Lu Han torn between wanting to punch his friend for the cute smiley expression on his face and the fiery urge to one-up him. The number one spot he had been eying forever and had been ardently chasing was the school grades. After every exam period, the 2000-something students in their school were listed according to their accomplishments and in the course of their competition, Yixing and Lu Han (who had both been rather bumbling students before) had made it into the top 10%. But always, always was Yixing just one rank above Lu Han.
“I don't understand,” Lu Han had wined the evening after the latest results came out, rolling on Yixing's bed. Tugging off his tie and loosening the first button of the white shirt of his school uniform, he made a face at Yixing who was hanging up his own blazer. “I swear I saw you spacing out in the test for at least five minutes!”
“Why did you watch me for five minutes?” Yixing countered, slight laughter underneath the tone of his voice, and grinned cheekily at Lu Han until the latter used his tie as a makeshift whip and swatted at Yixing. His friend only broke out in bubbles of laughter and dropped himself on top of Lu Han. “Maybe you'd have gotten more points if you had looked at your test paper.” They shoved each other playfully for a while until they settled comfortably next to each other and talked until the moon was already high in the sky.
“Why did you watch me for five minutes?” - The words stayed in the back of Lu Han's mind, a whispered echo and he huffed defiantly at himself. Of course he hadn't actually watched Yixing for five minutes, he wasn't all that interesting. Why would Lu Han look at him when he had to write a test? Those five minutes were better spent on answering questions. He only did something like that when Yixing pulled him into his room, sat him down on the desk chair and told him to listen to the new song he had composed on the guitar. He could do nothing but watch then because it would be impolite to talk over his song or to look away as if disinterested. He definitely didn't watch Yixing spooning homemade patbingsoo into his mouth while excitedly babbling about how he had found the recipe. The swirling in his stomach as his eyes definitely didn't follow the movements of Yixing's lips had to be from the condensed milk, maybe Lu Han was becoming lactose intolerant. (He also definitely, most definitely, didn't watch Yixing showering after P.E.. no, that would just be creepy. He covered his whole head with his towel, hiding his red cheeks and furiously towelling his hair.)
“Why did you watch me for five minutes?” - It stuck, no matter how Lu Han denied it. So in order to finally get rid of the taunting echo, he had to take action. He'd solve this the best, the only way there was: “Hey Yixing, bet I can stare at you for five minutes in the finals and still beat you in the rankings!” With his strongest resolve, he threw himself into studying (and only occasionally thought about kissing Yixing).
On the day the results were going to be pinned up on the school's bulletin board, Lu Han gathered with many other students in front of it, waiting for the list. His fists were clenched on his sides, body stiff and cheeks red from the tension. He had successfully completed the first part of his bet, scribbling answers on his test sheet at record speed so that he finished with enough time left to stare at Yixing for five minutes. He had set a timer on his phone and thrust it in Yixing's face after the exam. “Ha! I stared at you for eight minutes, twenty-four seconds,” he had exclaimed, flushed in triumph. Yixing had burst into laughter, the bright sound and his delighted expression bringing frustration at the same time as melting something in Lu Han's chest. He just had to rank above Yixing so that he would finally stop laughing all of Lu Han's wins of!
“Oh, there's head teacher He with the list.” Yixing's voice floated up next to Lu Han and he spun around, only now noticing his friend, having been to preoccupied with his thoughts before. But instead of a reply, his eyes grew wide and he shoved through a bunch of first-graders to search frantically for his name. He just had to be above Yixing! And there he found his name.
“Ha! I finally beat you!” He jabbed his finger at rank #188 on the list where his name shone gloriously exactly one rank above Yixing's. Yixing stepped next to him and looked at the list to confirm it.
“That's nice,” he said then, smiling at Lu Han without a streak of ill will, even clapping happily in celebration for Lu Han. Lu Han glared. Where the hell was the fun in this? He couldn't lord it over Yixing if he was so genuinely happy for him, giving him a thumbs-up and an eye-smile that had all of Lu Han's inside doing stupid somersaults. Huffing, he walked away from the bulletin board to go somewhere where he could sulk in peace.
Quick footsteps followed him and he knew it was Yixing, he would recognize the cadence of his short-legged pace anywhere even when he was running, but he didn't wait for Yixing, even walked faster to make catching up harder. “I updated our list!” Yixing called, out of breath, when he finally overtook Lu Han and turned around walking backwards to face him as he handed him the list. Lu Han tore it not too gently from his hands and grunted an acknowledgment of his win listed under “grades”. His eyes widened when he saw one more category newly listed at the bottom of the page. It read “Heart: Lu Han 1:0 Yixing”. He squinted at the note beside it. “I lost my heart to you, hahaha~”. He looked up to see Yixing smiling, dimple deep, lips closed bashfully. He was rubbing the back of his head and as soon as he saw realization dawn on Lu Han's face, he took off down the hallway, school bag bopping on his back.
“Zhang Yixing!” Lu Han shouted and ran after him, waving the list wildly in the air. “How can you always admit defeat so easily?!” (“Because,” Yixing would answer much later, flicking strands of Lu Han's hair who had his head pillowed on Yixing's chest, “when you win, it feels like I'm winning, too.”)
This, this last point on the list, was the only competition in which Lu Han didn't mind losing to Yixing. In fact, he made it a point to ague that he was the one who had lost first.
(They stopped with the list when the numbers under “snogging
girls” became too large for the spreadsheet and Yixing threw the paper away, laughing, before drawing Lu Han into his arms. Lu Han may have salvaged the list later on and kept it, stuffed in his pillow case, and every night he fell asleep on it, his heart may have jumped a little.)Re: wc!au: team bbh [c] – layhan fanfic
