She makes a sound of annoyance before plucking off Jongdae's snapback and placing it on her own head, and Jongdae is about to whine about her favorite hat, her favorite when Tao takes the opportunity to lean so her mouth is next to Jongdae's ear. Jongdae barely hears Tao say, "I snagged your hat so I could do this," before Tao nips at her earlobe. Oh, so this is okay. This is very okay.
They spending a couple of early afternoon hours like this, with Tao supporting her weight and Tao's hands finding homes in the pockets of her shorts (front and back, thank you very much). After an indie powerpop band finishes up onstage, Jongdae makes an executive decision to take a break and get something to drink. It's sweltering out, with a bright sun in a cloudless sky and temperatures reaching Fuck This I Don't Live in the Tropics. Apparently, to Tao that means stopping to buy a sports bottle. A sports bottle filled with an entire bottle of wine, Jongdae realizes as she watches the guy behind the counter pour the light gold liquid from the bottle without stopping until there's nothing left. Tao thanks the man and picks up the bottle, taking a minute to press it against her already pinking face.
"Are you going to share?" If the crowd was less dense, Tao could see that Jongdae is tapping her foot in annoyance.
"Nooo, this one is mine! I need to rehydrate," she says before sealing her plush lips around the straw and taking a long draw. Jongdae could tell her that's the dumbest thing she's ever heard, but instead she can't help but admire the way Tao's eyes close, eyelashes fanning across her cheek, as she hums happily. She lets go of the straw with a pop and wraps her arms around the sports bottle. Tao grins at Jongdae before draping an arm around her shoulder, chilled and slick from the bottle's condensation. It's a nice contrast to the hot sun baking her into the ground, and she leans into it. Tao starts, "I have an idea," before taking enough wine in her mouth to make her cheeks puff out in what must be the day's most adorable/ugly sight. Jongdae has a hand on her phone to snap it to everyone they know when Tao grabs her face with both hands and lurches into a kiss, prying open her lips to pass her a mouthful of white wine.
"That is absolutely disgusting," Jongdae retorts as she wrinkles her nose and tries to recover from a coughing fit. Tao laughs loud and bright in her ear.
"You love me anyway," she giggles.
"Yeah, yeah I do. Now give me that bottle, I'm still coughing," Jongdae says, putting out a hand and gesturing for Tao to hand it over. Tao only frowns and hugs the bottle close enough that it rests in the hollow between her breasts, dampening the thin fabric of her tank. Jongdae swallows and feels hot for another reason altogether.
"Fine. I'll buy another one of those ridiculously overpriced things, which I will remind you contains an entire bottle of wine and is prime for sharing with your girlfriend." Tao acknowledges her but has already spread out their blanket on the ground and is lounging on it like a lazy toddler with a sippy cup. She still looks perfect, and Jongdae allows her gaze to settle for a few seconds too long before turning around to purchase her own completely ridiculous bottle of wine. Today can only get better from here, she thinks.
Six hours later and after waiting through a surprisingly harrowing line for frozen cheesecake slices on sticks finds Jongdae ready to flop onto any available surface and wave a white flag. She must look as bedraggled and overwhelmed as she feels, because Tao looks up from the grass where she's splayed her limbs out and
"Well, this day has been a total disaster," Jongdae says as she flings an errant stone across the field they've parked themselves at. It's barely time for the headliner, but she feels too drained and grimy to volunteer another three hours sandwiched with thousands of other grimy people when she can't even see the stage to begin with. Stupid tall guys and their dumb hats.
Tao beckons her over and makes a sound of mild disappointment when Jongdae curls up behind her instead of in her lap, legs spread to match Tao’s so she can lean back into her.. “Please, Tao. I know how much you like being the little spoon.” Tao only sniffs as a reply, but her assent is all over the way she relaxes and scoots closer to rest on Jongdae’s chest. Jongdae wraps her arms around Tao’s middle beneath her chest and allows herself to enjoy the relative quiet, with Tao’s hair tickling her nose (she smells like sweat and expensive perfume) and her fingers running aimless patterns on the back of Jongdae’s hands where they’re clasped. Naturally, Tao has to spoil the moment and note just how tiny Jongdae’s legs are next to hers, almost vibrating with laughter while she says it.
“If today hadn’t been such a disaster, I’d be tickling you until you begged for mercy right about now,” Jongdae retorts, hoping her empty threat sounds as withering as she hopes.
"Not a total disaster," Tao starts before turning around to see Jongdae's face, brows raised and lips pursed. "Okay, so we both look like lobsters, I did lose my new sunglasses, and that guy almost throw up all over our blanket, you skinned a knee while rushing to find a port a potty, which by the way makes you look even cuter, somehow--
"You're conveniently leaving out the part where you drank an entire bottle of wine out of a sports bottle in under twenty minutes," Jongdae responds before leaning forward to bump noses with her girlfriend.
"Yeah, but you drank plenty after that. I drank plenty after that too, ha. But I did like the music. And the company." She leans forward to peck Jongdae on the lips before sighing and tilting her head for a different kind of kiss entirely. After a long day of crowds and lines, this quiet moment between only them feels more than welcome.
It hadn't all been so terrible, not if Jongdae thinks about it, like the set they had been far away enough from the throng of hot bodies for Tao to hoist Jongdae on her shoulders. She has to praise her girlfriend's strength, to be able to hold her up like that with ease and lazily stroke the tops of Jongdae's bare thighs with her hands. Even the memory of it makes her feel wild and carefree, if only for a fleeting moment when reality snaps back into place when she twists the wrong way and the reddened skin on her arms stings with the movement.
"Okay, I'm done. I finally got bitten by one too many mosquitoes, and I could use a good shower."
"Mmmm. You know how I feel about showering alone. I'm going to put on the satin sheets and dig to find the good aloe vera lotion so I can thank you properly for coming out with me today." Jongdae must look confused, because Tao scrunches up her face and says, “Sexy massage time, duh.” And well, maybe Jongdae's night is looking up after all.
