“Hey Jongdae, what were you doing at the arcade yesterday?” asked Chanyeol the moment Jongdae walked into the classroom. The taller slung his arm across the shorter’s shoulder.

“I wasn’t at the arcade. I was at home all day after school,” he said as he shrugged in an attempt to dislodge Chanyeol’s arm. He never did appreciate being treated like an armrest but Chanyeol was stubborn as usual, his hand tightly gripping onto Jongdae’s arm.

“No way man. Baek and I both saw you there. You were kind of out of it though, like, just walking around in a daze. I called out to you but you didn’t hear me.”

“Like I said, I was home all day. Look. You can ask Joonmyun and my dad. Joonmyun was tutoring me after school and I had to cook dinner after he left because mom was working overtime and dad’s been sick all week,” huffed Jongdae as he dumped his bag onto his table, wrenching himself out of Chanyeol’s grip.

He wasn’t in a good mood. He was, quite frankly, feeling irritable and his head has been hurting for the past few days. A dull but persistent throb that added to his bad mood making his temper shorter and shorter. Maybe he had caught his father’s flu. He should just go home and rest.

“So what? Is it like your doppleganger or something?” asked Chanyeol, resting his chin on Jongdae’s table as he squatted down next to it.

“Doppelganger?” Jongdae’s interest was piqued.

“Yeah, like, it’s a double of yourself. People say that when you meet your doppelganger, you die.”

Well, that killed any interest Jongdae had immediately.

“What the fuck,” he managed to say.

“I guess that if the person we saw yesterday wasn’t you, it must have been your ganger. Unless you’ve got a long lost twin and they’ve come back looking for your family...” Chanyeol paused then.

“FOR REVENGE,” he shouted dramatically, hands flailing around for effect.

Before Jongdae could say anything, the classroom door slid open and Kim-seonsaengnim walked in, shouting, “Everyone to your seats!” over the student’s voices.

“Park, get back to your seat!”

---

Do Kyungsoo cornered him after school, which was in itself rather strange considering how they almost never talked because Kyungsoo was from the next class (2-3) and they only really interacted whenever Baekhyun had parties and invited every single person he knew.

“Did you see something?” he asked, startling Jongdae who was pulling his sneakers out from his shoe locker. Jongdae almost banged his head against the tiny metal locker door but narrowly avoided it. He turned to glare at Kyungsoo who simply stared at him unblinkingly with those large eyes of him.

“What? Is there something on my face?"

“Have you seen the person who supposedly looks like you? he asked, a deep frown settling between his eyebrows.

“Uh… no,” he said slowly. He dropped his sneakers to the floor, toeing off the school sandals and slipping his socked feet into the more comfortable sneakers.

“Look, if that’s all, I have to go home to check on my dad and stuff,” murmured Jongdae as he pulled out his ipod from his backpocket and unwound the earphones that was wrapped around the sleek metal music player.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said dismissively, barely sparing Kyungsoo one last look before he walked off with music blasting in his ears.

Kyungsoo simply stood there, staring at Jongdae’s back until he couldn’t see it anymore. Then, Kyungsoo simply turned back and silently disappeared down the corridor towards his classroom.

---

Jongdae’s forgotten about it by the time he got home. In between getting squashed by the other passengers on the train (god damned rush hour) and battling with the ahjummas in his neighbourhood for the vegetables on sale, he barely had time to think about anything else.

Things have been hard since Jongdeok went to the army. Their father was a writer who often fell sick and was usually in his study, buried under ideas under manuscripts, when he waasn’t sick and his mother often had to work overtime at the office, leaving most of the household chores to the brothers.

“I’m home!” hollered Jongdae as he took off his shoes but there was no reply. His father was probably sleeping upstairs. He’d wake him up once dinner was ready.

He walked towards the kitchen, humming under his breath as he swung the plastic bags full of groceries lightly, but he stopped at the entrance of the kitchen, breath stuck in his throat when he saw a shadowy figure inside.

It turned around slowly, eyes meeting Jongdae’s for a brief second before it disappeared into thin air.

The next thing Jongdae knew was that there were potatoes rolling next to the feet. The plastic bags had slipped out of his grip during the short encounter when his fingers had gone slack with shock.

He bent down to pick up the tubers, hands trembling as he put them inside the plastic bags.

That ‘shadow’ had looked exactly like him.

His stomach lurched when he thought about the shadow. He swallowed tightly, forcing the nausea down as he set the groceries down on the kitchen table.

It must have been a, what did Chanyeol call it, a doppelganger?

Was he going to die then?

His hands were still shaking when he dug around inside his backpack for his mobile phone. Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo seemed like he knew about this topic. He pulled the phone out from between his textbooks, quickly unlocking it and scrolling through his contacts list for Do Kyungsoo.

Kyungsoo picked up after the first ring.

“Kyungsoo. It’s Jongdae. I saw it,” he said, rushing the words out as quickly as possible.

He could hear Kyungsoo exhale on the other side of the line. “When and where?” he asked.

“In my house. I just. It disappeared as soon as our eyes met.”

There was a pause as Kyungsoo seemed to talk to someone else, their voices too muffled for Jongdae to make out.

“We’ll be there in ten minutes,” said Kyungsoo before hanging up on Jongdae.

“We? Ten minutes?” asked Jongdae as he stared at his phone.

---

The doorbell went off when Jongdae was peeling the potatoes. He dropped the potato into the bowl of water, wiping his hands on his apron before he jogged to the door.

While he had been expecting Kyungsoo, he hadn’t expected Joonmyun (of all people) to be there at his doorstep with the shorter man. He stared at Joonmyun for a moment, mouth opening and closing without any sound coming out.

Joonmyun simply smiled sweetly at him and said, “I don’t suppose you could let us in Jongdae-yah?”

Jongdae stepped aside wordlessly and the two boys walked into his house, Kyungsoo nodding once at Jongdae before he took off his shoes and arranged it neatly next to Joonmyun’s.

---

“A doppelganger is born from your thoughts. Your thoughts and your emotions that you don’t act on,” explained Joonmyun. “In the beginning, they haunt the places related to your thoughts but then they start going to places where you usually go and to see the people you are close to. It eventually comes looking for you.”

Kyungsoo was drawing an extremely detailed explanation of how the shadow splits from the original, reaching the end where the shadow kills the original and replaced them, before Joonmyun could explain it.

Jongdae didn’t even know what to say. He could only stare at the drawings before he looked up at Kyungsoo who was observing him quietly.

“You can usually get rid of the doppelganger by touching it before it gains sentience,” Joonmyun said.

“But seeing as it came to see you, I don’t think that that’s an option anymore,” murmured Kyungsoo.

“Well. That just means we have to hunt it down.”

Joonmyun sounded awfully bright for someone who’s going to chase after a shadow that was trying to kill Jongdae.

---

“To cut down a doppelganger, you just need something that’s the product of an equally strong or a stronger will,” explained Joonmyun as he uncapped the bottle of water he’d brought with him. Jongdae could only stare as the water flowed out of the bottle in a stream and straight into his senior’s hands before it formed a long sword.

Joonmyun lunged towards the doppelganger, ducking as the shadow swiped at his head. He swung the sword, aiming for its legs but before it could make contact with the doppelganger, a wall came up between them. A claw-like shadow extended from the black wall, lashing out at Joonmyun, striking him under his ribs and sending him skidding backwards on his knees.

“Never thought that I’d see the moment of birth of one of my brothers,” said a voice.

“Baek…?” asked Jongdae, confused.

The wall that was protecting the doppelganger came down and Jongdae could see his childhood friend walking towards them.

Baekhyun watched Joonmyun push himself up slowly, panting for air as he clutched at his injured side, head cocked to the side, a little smirk on his face, before he turned to Jongdae and smiled, all teeth.

“Hi Jongdae! I think that it’s great that one of my childhood friends will be joining me soon,” he said, “It’s a pity that you had to come with filth like this nasty little hunter.”

Jongdae’s eyes widened in realisation.

“You’re a doppelganger,” he said, horrified.

Baekhyun’s face crumbled like a porcelain mask then, revealing glowing eyes in a swirling mass of shadows.

“Got that right, sweetcakes,” said Baekhyun with a wink.

“When did you? When did Baek?”

“How rude. I am Baekhyun after all,” said the doppelganger as it reconstructed Baekhyun’s face. It took a step forward only to be blasted back with a surge of water.

“Run Jongdae,” hissed Joonmyun, “I’ll hold them back for a while but you need to run.”

Jongdae wanted answers but. He nodded and ran away, leaving behind the angry growls of his own doppelganger and Baekhyun.

---

“You can run but you can’t hide,” said the voice that was eerily like Baekhyun’s but when Jongdae listened to it closely, it lacked the spark of emotion that Baekhyun had. It was always easy to tell how Baekhyun was feeling because it always slipped into his voice even when he was smiling but now all he could hear was empty, cold words.

Jongdae clamped his hands over his mouth as he curled into himself inside the locker, resisting the urge to sob.

Baekhyun was gone. Gone and no one knew.

He could hear the slow shuffling of feet fading into the discord of claws scraping against the tiles.
