(SUHO is visibly wearing a black beanie and double hooded gray hoodie. He is sitting behind the passenger seat of a mini van, and it is driving along highways. There are three cameras pointed at him. A person off camera gives him prompts and questions to answer during the ride. It is likely sometime in early March 2020.)

0:00 They say your album was inspired from Van Gogh’s work, is there any reason you like the artist?
Well… I can’t draw at all. I’m really bad at it. I don’t have a professional interest in art. I couldn’t understand why people would go to a museum and see the works. I didn’t know how as well. When we went to Switzerland for a magazine photoshooting I saw Van Gogh’s works at the museum. When I saw them for the first time, I understand why it’s important that you see them firsthand. That [experience] helped me have an interest in art. If you take a look at them closely you can see all the brush marks. Especially on his self-portrait I could feel his emotions the most.

The same person drew the same person, himself. But depending on what his feelings were that day, all of them were self-portraits but the depth of his emotions in the brush marks was different. It was fascinating that I could feel that. Ever since, I’ve been following him to Auvers-sur-Oise and Musée d'Orsay I saw a lot of his paintings and self-portraits. I have him as my phone wallpaper. I fell in love with him.

If I got to release a solo album, I wanted to name it “Self-Portrait,” and express the deepest part of me. I wanted to create that kind of album. That was my goal ever since.

1:39 There are many band sound based tracks, How’s that related to your music taste?
This may be edited out but… Basically, I liked band music. I liked it since I was little. In particular I loved listening to NELL’s music as a teenager. When you listen now, some songs are very philosophical. I don’t know if I understood the songs fully, but whenever I had a hard time… [I listened]. Band sounds give people a sort of… Comfort? Chills? That’s very interesting.

I went to Coldplay’s concert once. We, EXO, dance, and talk a lot on stage. But all they did was music. And their comments were, “We love you,” and “Thank you.” (chortles) You get this energy even without words. You can communicate through that energy. That was what I felt.

Being in musicals, I get to work with orchestras, and the stage is very full. I’m not lonely even when I’m singing alone. The fact that you are with people playing instruments, live. That creates this synergy effect. It’s exciting as a musician. So if I got to release a solo album, I wanted to work on songs with band sounds. I’ve been thinking of that for a long time. I had a meeting on my album with A&R [Artists & Repertoire]. They said the sound would go well with my voice. It’s a different genre, a new challenge. The fans would be surprised. I would be able to find my own color. That’s why this album has many band sound music.

3:02 They say the original title of “Self-Portrait” was “Plagiarism.” Why did you start writing lyrics with such a strong word?
Habit is a scary thing. There is a song too (mumbles indistinctly and moves to a song, side-eyes camera and stops). This song. Habit can be scary. When you see someone for a long time, you get to know too well. And without knowing it, you take what you did with that person and “plagiarize.” That was the beginning of the work.

For example, I’d been roommates with SEHUN for 7 years. What I did before going to bed, or right after getting up. It’s been over a year since we stopped being roommates, but I was still repeating the routine. When you bond with someone, get closer, and understand each other well, even when you’re not with that person anymore, you repeat the habit without knowing it. I can repeat. There’s no problem with my thinking of SEHUN. But if you had a break up… Of course, the memory could be a happy one after a long time.

But right after the break up, you would want to forget everything. There are behaviors and thoughts that you repeat. That reminded me of the common but bad word “plagiarism.” And too many people said the word was too negative, and that it may cause a misunderstanding. I was writing lyrics myself, “Draw,” “Repeat,” “Remember.” “You come into me.” Those are the words that came to my mind. Then I thought the words went well with the “Self-Portrait.” I’m drawing my face, but you can also see her face. You want to forget the memory but some must be happy memories. To avoid using a strong word and describe it beautifully with “self-portrait,” people would relate to it more effectively, and feel the sadness. That’s why the tentative title “Plagiarism” became “Self-Portrait.”

4:42 Is there a relationship between “Starry Night” from this album and “Curtain" from the previous release?
Yes, a strong one. That was intended. The new song tells the story after “Curtain.” If the tracklist goes as I planned, it starts from going out to break up. And lastly, the couple would wish happiness to each other. And hopes to meet again. That’s how the story ends. The fourth track is “Starry Night.” Let’s say that “Curtain” is inserted right before that track. When you stay up all night, you have to sleep in the morning. You want to block the sunlight. When you close the black-out curtain, you don’t know the passage of time. It feels like you are alienated from the world. I’m alone in this space? There is always an end to a relationship. “Curtain” is a story after a breakup. But describing it in a beautiful way.

“I want to dance with you // even after the curtain falls”

It explains in a figurative way. But “Starry Night” is more depressing. Very pathetic in how it describes the feeling. The outside of a breakup is “Curtain.” “Starry Night” is about the inside. No beautiful words whatsoever. It looks pathetic but it talks about the inside of a breakup. That’s why “Starry Night” comes after “Curtain.”

5:52 You participated in writing the lyrics for all tracks, what made you do it?
The biggest reason is the musicals. There is no prompter. And you have to memorize all the lyrics from start to end. You sing what you want to say. So I realized without translating the true meaning of the lyrics, I couldn’t act in a musical. You have to memorize the lyrics and analyze and translate the meanings. You go deeper and deeper into the words, to understand the exact meaning, and reflect on it. During that process, I learned that, the melody may be the same, but with different situations, expressions change, the message changes, and the overall air changes. Lyrics are critical. That’s what I learned. That’s when I wrote “Do You Have A Moment” and “Dinner.”

Jane Jang told me that I have a talent in writing lyrics, and she helped me a lot. I got more confidence after that. So I thought I would like to write lyrics for my own songs to make them sound more sincere. During an EXO promotion, individual activities, or acting whenever I had ideas or heard something from other people, I would write down keywords. I thought, it would be fun if there’s a story, when I made an album. Those were recorded from a year ago. I still have a long way to go as a lyricist. The words came out of my head but many people helped me with it. That’s how I got great lyrics. Whether it’s a solo album or not, if I have a chance to sing I would like to write my lyrics.

7:24 They say you wanted to make an album like a “self-portrait” of your 8 years
I decided the title to be “self-portrait.” I thought it would be great to look back on my path through the album. In a month, it’s our 8th anniversary. It’s my 9th year already. I’m not a special person. It’s just that I have a special job. Not an ordinary one. That’s why I went through a lot, from happy to sad. SUHO or Kim Junmyeon, from the age 21 to 30. I went through a lot really. During that period, EXO SUHO and an ordinary guy Kim Junmyeon, had lots of experience and met many people. I wanted to capture all of that in this album. The tracks go from the start to breakup and wishing for happiness. You may think of it as a love story. It’s not simply about romance. I hope you think more broadly that it could be a story between two people. I’m sure you’ll get a totally different feeling.

I’m not perfect, but Kim Junmyeon, 30 years old or EXO SUHO wanted to tell his past story. The story is ongoing. And it’s a heartfelt one. Hope you give loves of love. Whatever I do, I’m always sincere. Thank you. (finger hearts at all three cameras in the car)

anons is it me bored as hell under quarantine or was the internet just more fun like 5-10 years ago?

i miss so much stuff, like kpop in general was far more active on niche places like this. now it's so centralised on twitter and what not. i miss coming home from school and watching a new reality show with exo or some other group that would stick around for more than a year... now it's all so temporary and scandal-ridden.

there's other stuff too. like, i miss fanfic on livejournal (basically dead now), i miss gaming forums (also dead)... i never really posted on these but i loved seeing how active they all were. now it's all gone or filled with trolls and i don't know where everyone went. i miss going to a specific final fantasy or nintendo game forum or some niche jrpg game's forum and still seeing it active as hell. now they're either inactive or closed.

is everyone really just on instagram and tiktok? i know yt has grown in good ways (especially with gaming) but it doesn't feel like a community to me.

i forgot to look earlier but it's on youtubeImage without any language subs rn

also i looked at this post on an ipad and the special characters in the subject line look very ugly. lol i'm sorry anons.

wish i didn’t know about them too lmao
oo i adore langmanpanda’s art, thanks for the info, anon!

while i'm grateful for ao3 there's zero sense of community there and people don't submit comments. i have a community on discord but my activity on there fluctuates. on (kpop) twt i hide behind retweets and have sporadic conversations via dm. there's another social network i use to talk to one friend. other than those specified, i use the internet for looking up stuff, bills, window shopping, and email. idk about yt too impatient to watch videos now, even kpop mvs. i left ig when it got bought by fb and i will never use tiktok.

lol my answer is boring but ia that the internet felt different even 5 years ago. i wonder if the internet of other languages feel similarly to english language users like you and me.
