anyway the run down of pokemon is that there are pokemon trainers, who can raise/train/breed/fight with their pokemon. think of them as animals, only there are even more of them and they're more intelligent and can "evolve" into different types, through a variety of methods. pokemon trainers generally leave their towns with a starter pokemon (obtained from the local lab) and battle pokemon they encounter in the wild. these are generally low level and make good additions to a starting team, while also strengthening your starter pokemon. most trainers have every deep emotional bonds with their starters (think ash and pikachu), but ymmv. each trainer's team can only have 6 pokemon at any one time; any extras can be stored at pokecentres. you can train by exploring forests, bodies of water, fields, caves, or other areas where pokemon can be found, even other trainers.

once you have a strong enough team, you can go into cities and fight gym leaders. these leaders have their own stadium and their own specialties, and generally their teams of pokemon are fairly cohesive (all grass type pokemon, psychic, etc). if you fight a gym leader and win, they give you a badge. your ultimate goal is to have a badge from every gym, and then go and fight the elite four. the elite four are just ~super gym leaders~.
