second year is a nightmare for sehun, literally--he starts blacking out, losing track of time, waking up screaming almost every night because of dreams he can't even remember.

jongin thinks it's because of the chamber; because they were the ones who found baekhyun and chanyeol petrified and heard what happened to the others. zitao hovers even more than usual, and even daeun keeps a pretty close eye on him.

sehun brushes them off as much as he can, preferring to pour all of his thoughts and worries into the battered old diary he'd found in his schoolbooks at the beginning of the year rather than risk his friends thinking he’s even more of a baby than they already do. he doesn't realize that that's what's wrong until it's too late.

"i would have died," he says to his mother that summer, when he can finally bring himself to talk about it. he’d lied to everyone else after jongin had rescued him from the chamber, of course. he'd sworn that he had no idea how tom riddle's diary had found its way into his things. but he knows.

"i know, darling, and we would have mourned you for the rest of our lives," she says, her voice catching. he can see tears in her eyes. "but what is right is not always easy."

sehun thinks about waking up in the chamber, his head in jongin's lap, jongin sweaty and bloody and staring down at him, his terror turning to relief as he realizes sehun’s going to live, after all. about realizing what had happened and being flooded with guilt for being part of it, however involuntarily, but also feeling safe for the first time all year just because jongin was there with him. that's what caring about someone means, he thinks, not this. not what his parents have done.

and that is the moment his loyalties are irrevocably decided.

"i thought voldemort's followers were all slytherins," jongin says dumbly when sehun confesses everything on their way to hogwarts at the start of their third year. loyalty, he's always been taught, means not keeping secrets, and this one's been weighing on him for too long.

"most of them," sehun confirms. "but think about it. if you're the dark--i mean, you-know-who, do you want followers who are extra ambitious or followers who are extra hardworking and loyal?"

"hell," jongin says as the idea dawns on him.

"exactly," sehun says grimly. "my brother's one of them. i'm supposed to be, too. i was supposed to get you on our side."

"how do we know you're telling the truth now?" zitao says, speaking up for the first time since sehun's told them everything. he's pressed back against the corner of the seat, arms crossed over his chest. Zitao had once mentioned that his grandparents had been tortured and killed by death eaters, sehun remembers. his family had been responsible for killing families like zitao’s. like jongin’s.

"i've done a really bad job of helping them, haven't i?" sehun points out.

"and you changed your mind because of me?" jongin asks, still looking stunned.

sehun looks away sharply. he can feel his face getting hot, though he has no idea why. "not just because of you," he says defensively. "i like muggle-borns. i like the wizarding world the way it is. i don't want another war, i don't want anyone to get hurt-" he swallows, hard, and cuts off. if there's another war, his parents will be in it; his brother; probably everyone he's going to school with. if there's another war, jongin will be the number one target.

he digs his nails into his palms. he doesn't want either of his friends to see him getting upset. this year's going to be different. he’s not a little kid. he’s not a victim. if jongin can be strong enough to get through a year of everyone thinking he was the heir of slytherin, sehun can handle this.

"i believe you," jongin says abruptly, and hugs sehun tightly before he can react. "thanks, sehunnie." zitao, who sehun is pretty sure couldn't resist a hug if the dark lord himself was offering it, throws himself on top of them after a few seconds. neither of them comment on how sehun isn’t the first to let go.
