Baekhyun is comfortable with patterns, the well-worn grooves of routine that don't necessarily require thinking so much as familiarity of action. He likes knowing what to expect, because it means he's ahead of the game. These things make sense to him. That a Swiss bank account with dirty money will eventually lead him to the yakuza, or the mafia, or the mob. That afternoons with Jongdae will always end in whiskey sours whether Baekhyun likes them or not. That Joonmyun might never stop trying to micromanage from his new position, even though K's finer modes of operation aren't exactly under his purview anymore.

Kai is a persistent enigma. Even though they construct a semblance of stable rapport through working the same jobs, Baekhyun's still thrown for a loop when Kai smiles with toothily, entire face crinkling with it, or when he actually dozes off in Baekhyun's presence, shirt riding up to expose the hard planes of his stomach. He takes without question what Baekhyun offers: intelligence reports, food, a spot on his couch for the catnaps he likes to take in lieu of proper sleep.

People like them don't get attached easily. They don't have that kind of luxury. Baekhyun has a large number of friends and connections in this business, even some that he genuinely cares about, but he can count on one hand the number of people he trusts enough to let his guard down around. This living situation doesn't equate with anything Baekhyun knows about Kai on paper. He's familiar with Kai's personnel file like he is with all the others, but he also knows what he observes, all the little tics and idiosyncrasies that make Kai who he is. He hates apples and speaking in front of crowds, and always picks the mushrooms out of his japchae. He comes and goes as he pleases, works himself to exhaustion, is always the first to throw himself into the line of fire when jobs go awry. He expects nothing less than excellence from the rest of the brigade. He sets off delayed explosions that violate all sorts of standard procedure to get rid of evidence after a kill and doesn't hesitate to hike a swift knee up into Sehun's gut when he's being especially recalcitrant.

It's just the sort of quiet spontaneity that Baekhyun can't figure out, no matter how hard he tries to plug it into known equations.

He's surprised to find that it doesn't bother him as much as he'd expected it to. In fact, if he wants to be honest with himself—he really rather likes it.





Kai imposes a brutal training regimen on most of K's regulars at the end of August. It's all vaguely reminiscent of Jaewon's days as S3 before Director Lee transferred him out to deal with the Southeast Asian branch of the company. Baekhyun tries to talk Kai out of it. Tries to convince him that gathering a bunch of restless, reckless killers in one place and forcing them into mandatory physical training isn't exactly the brightest idea. Kai's technically supposed to lead, but he's still one of the new kids on the block.

Kai is unmoved by his pointed suggestions. And—maybe there's something to be said about sheer reputation as a primary motivator, because K takes to it with little more than the faintest whisper of complaint. The quarter starts looking up. Hit-count rises to five kills a week. Kai offers casual cigarettes after shooting practice at the range one afternoon and nobody except Jongdae accepts, the rest muttering flimsy excuses. Baekhyun hears about it secondhand from Lu Han and snorts coffee up his nose.





There's still the problem of who is trying to pick them off.

In September, when Kai is somewhere in Russia on assignment, Sehun and Zitao come back with a parcel that is supposed to contain sensitive information about the Triads.

It doesn't. Lu Han, bless his uncanny instincts, intercepts them at the docks on the river and manages to chuck the package into the water before it explodes. "It was ticking, you dumbass," he's yelling, when Joonmyun and Baekhyun make it down to the pier.

Sehun narrowly avoids the airborne Nalgene aimed at his head, catches it before it clatters to the ground. "If you hadn't thrown it into the water we could've brought it back to the lab and had it examined," he mumbles mulishly.

"Yeah?" Lu Han snaps. "Before or after we'd been blown up?"

Zitao lounges off to the side, leaning against the railing and looking bored. "How long have they been going at it?" Joonmyun asks.

"Oh, maybe twenty minutes?"

Baekhyun shakes his head. "Pack it up, ladies."

Lu Han still looks like he wants to throttle someone, but he clamps his mouth shut and stalks off back toward the island, snatches his bottle out of Sehun's loose grasp as he passes. Sehun shuffles away miserably. Zitao waves a careless hand and follows after them.

"Have people from the lab dredge up what they can," Joonmyun tells him, a troubled expression on his face.

"Of course," Baekhyun says, shivering despite the afternoon heat, and turns to watch the rippling waves.





It's the Minho fiasco all over again. Baekhyun's helpless. He has neither the information he needs nor the means to obtain it. Those are his friends getting shot at out there, because no one seems to know who the fuck is after them.

He has a blurry dream about the warehouse exploding, and this time everyone is in it, not just Kibum and Jinki and Jonghyun—but Kris and Joonmyun, too, staring through the window with wide, scared eyes. And the others: Chanyeol and Jongdae, Kyungsoo, Lu Han, Yixing and Zitao. Kai and the other replacements, even though a niggling thought persists in the back of Baekhyun's head and tells him they weren't there, they were never there. Except now they are—everyone in K is packed inside the warehouse like sardines when the roof blows sky high, and the shrapnel that hits Baekhyun breaks his skin at what feels like a millimeter an hour, slowly shredding him into bits.

When he jerks out of it, the moon's still hanging cold and picturesque through the glass, and the sheets are bunched up at the foot of the bed. The arc of scar tissue beneath his left ear burns like it did the day he got it. He fumbles through the bottom drawer of the bedside table and shakes a couple of Advil out of the bottle before passing out once more.
