Prefect duties are not glorious.

Sure Kris gets to stand at the front and lead fresh-faced first years through the Great Halls for their first time. He also gets a shiny badge with the Hufflepuff Badger pinned to his chest. But on the flip side he sometimes has to stand in for Professor Lin when she detains Slytherin’s most infamous group of troublemakers for weekly detention.

He looks up from his desk and decides that it’s maybe not all that bad. Despite their reputation the four boys had come in quietly to the west wing of the castle. Kris had been instructed beforehand to separate them (for his own good, Professor Lin insists with a pitying look in her eyes) to opposite sides of the room. Although now that he seriously thinks about it, it makes little difference since the room is quite small and only the five of them are in there anyways.

They look younger than Kris although one of them is quite tall, and Kris really can’t see that one baby faced boy as being much older than a third year.

They’re about fifteen minutes into the hour long detention when things start going awry.

“How many Slytherins does it take to screw in a lightbulb?” the blonde boy sitting closets to Kris asks, breaking the silence of the classroom. From the side of the room, Kris hears a snicker.

“Exactly one,” the tall boy with some of the most prominent ears Kris has ever seen not including those on a house elf drawls, “to blackmail a Hufflepuff.”

“I resent that,” Kris scowls, setting his book down. It’s then he realizes that neither the tall boy nor the blonde boy have their books out. The tall boy actually has enough gall to have his legs propped up on the desk. He lifts an eyebrow back at Kris with a devil may care sort of attitude as Kris pointedly stares at his offending feet.

“Take your feet off your desk,” Kris says plainly, scowling even further as the boy nonchalantly whips out his wand to send his desk flying from under his feet into the wall.

“Off,” he says as the boy with sharp cheekbones laughs plainly offering a projected high-five with a whip of his own wand, “will that suffice Mr. Prefect?”

“No.” Kris growls, trying to sound intimidating even though he can already tell that this is too much for him to handle. “Put the desk back, Mr.-?”

“Park,” the tall boy says. “Are you going to write me up now? Cause I think you need my first name for that too.”

“Nah.” The blonde boy scoffs before Kris can get a word in, “I don’t think he can, besides I’m pretty sure we’ve hit maximum detention time as of two weeks ago.”

“Only two weeks?” the third boy offers and Kris grits his teeth in frustration.

“Put your desk back and take our your books,” he orders to no avail as the three boys turn towards each other conspiratorially.

“What do you call a Hufflepuff with one brain cell?” Blondie cackles and Kris contemplates casting a silencing charm on the three of them, when the fourth boy who had been silent all this time looks up from his book.

Kris freezes somehow feeling the most unnerved by him. He opens his mouth and takes Kris completely by surprise.

“Gifted.”

The hallway echoes with laughter and Kris sighs.

It’s going to be a very long hour.
