When he walked down the hallways now, the whispers followed him. He was cursed as a child. He was a were-Dementor. He was Voldemort, reincarnated. He had the touch of death.

Yixing didn't care about the rumours, but he cared about his friends. Jongin reassured him that there was nothing wrong with him, but that's what Sehun had said too. Sometimes, Yixing caught Xiumin looking at him warily, sadly; once, tapping Junmyeon's shoulder made Junmyeon yelp in fright. Junmyeon had laughed it off, apologizing sheepishly, but Yixing couldn't forget that look on his face.

So he spent his time taking long walks by himself, along the lake, the forest. The darkness there felt almost welcoming, but he never ventured out of sight from the school. He knew the stories. But one night he caught sight of a unicorn, a silver mirage against a backdrop of skeletal trees, shimmering even without any moonlight, its limpid brown eyes steady on his for a long, breathless second. As Yixing stared, large, black shadows lurked closer at his periphery: shadows of tall, boney beasts with wings, growing larger until they engulfed his vision, until the white unicorn was the only bright thing Yixing could see.

By the next week, he'd earned a new nickname: Zhang Yixing, threstral master.

This one, Yixing actually liked. The threstrals weren't afraid of him at all. They liked apples, liked getting pats on the muzzle. They seemed to enjoy his music. They nudged him forward, like eager mothers, until he finally got up the courage to press a shaking hand to the unicorn who always met him inside the forest, ten steps too far away.

The threstrals were there, standing guard behind him, as the unicorn led Yixing deeper into the forest, to where there was no light at all except from many pairs of red, bat eyes, and a long, incandescent horn. Yixing followed until the horn stopped moving, then bowed down to the forest floor.

On the ground, illuminated by the point of the unicorn's horn, lay a tiny diamond-shaped stone. It was plain, very dark, but when Yixing picked it up it felt warm in the palm of his hand, and pulsed like a heartbeat.
