The first rule of entering a drift is to forget. The second is to never form intimate relations with your co-pilot. The third is to let go all reservations, to pull all triggers and scream your hail mary’s for all its worth.

The third rule was more of an implied rule, whispered among the ranks of the academy out of bemusement and fear. Jongin pays it little heed until he reaches the drift zone for real, trapped in a titanium golem with nothing but fear and adrenaline coursing through his veins.

But at the age of 13, Jongin finds the first two easy enough. His first drift partner is a boy around his age. Slight in build, but quick on his feet, his name is Taemin and he is Jongin’s first real friend.

They look uncannily alike, so much so that they could be brothers- even twins maybe, and the numbers don’t lie. Their first simulator synchronization rate starts at a steady 90% and never dips from the moment they enter each other’s minds.

Within the first week of training, it’s a solid 97%. One of the highest the academy has ever seen, and will ever see in the next half-decade or so.

In many ways they’re the perfect team.

In co-piloting a Jaegar, the neural system is split in two: left-brain and right-brain. For Jongin who has never found the intricacies of trigonometry interesting, it works perfectly. They fill each other’s weaknesses, without overriding each other’s strengths, and within half a year there are rumors that they will be the youngest unit to ever be deployed.

It’s not meant to be though and when Commander Lee announces the line-up of five to serve as back-up pilots in Japan, Taemin is among them. Jongin is not.

There’s shock, disappointment, and confusion swirling amongst the ranks, but none of it reaches the overwhelming sense of betrayal Jongin feels. A sense of bitterness that it’s not simply half of his brain that has been chosen, but the better half of it.

Jongin grabs onto Taemin’s wrist, finger latching onto his pulse. Taemin looks back and gives a small smile. It’s the same smile Taemin gives before every drift, clammy fingers clasped into his- “to boayo, jongin-yah”

Jongin lets him go, watching the back of his mushroom bob disappear into the skyship, and tries not to cry.

Moonkyu falls into a coma a week before they officially inherit the Mach III prototype- KAI. Jongin is still wading through their connection when everything goes a blinding white. Jongin trembles as the hot neural impulses surge through his brain and he struggles to break the drift. His eyes roll as the screaming registers in his ears, a blunt pounding in his ears and throat. The jerking of his limbs against the floor hit something soft and wet and everything goes a terrifying black.

The neural impulse surged too strong, the doctor explains later and Jongin nods numbly. He's not really listening, eyes tracing the basic shapes on the hospital's choice of tacky wallpaper. There's a missing shape, a triangle shaped slot where color should be and Jongin trains his eyes over it. He vaguely registers that his nose is still bleeding, the tangy copper scent seeping into his mouth. He listens calmly to the doctor’s mechanical voice parrot instructions: drink water, no strenuous exercise, sleep well. Finally, he leaves and Jongin keeps staring at the blank space on the wall as the blood dripping off his chin forms a puddle on his chest, leaking down the sheet

A month later, Jongin plugs himself back into the drift alone, falling away into the blur and slide of memories like a fast swimming school of fish. Amidst the flashing silvers and glided scales, Jongin closes his eyes.

He forgets.

not really a snippet but is an idea okay...

so adding to the flood of catboy aus, yixing is kris's kitten basically. the world is if fifty or so years into our past the first appearance of humans with certain animal features appeared (result of illegal genetic modification etc etc). while at first they're accepted and assimilated into society inasmuch as someone with dog ears and tails can be, fast forward seventy years or so and the thinking has changed that they are innately inferior to human beings. colloquially referred to as Pluses, most are relegated to the roles of...pets. which, one could argue, is what they had been engineered to be.

um plotwise ig it's pretty basic

yixing is kris's stay-at-home plus-kitten and he's content with their life, but outside of the house, kris has his own life obvs. uh, he ta's a class and then there's baekhyun in that class and after that term ends they kind of start hooking up altho yixing isn't aware of it until after kris brings baek home (altho he recognises that smell already so he puts the pieces together of why kris has been home less often). but since yixing is a plus and baekhyun isn't yixing is all "...well humans are suppoesd to be with humans anyway" but then kris feels guilty and then...somehow there is an ot3 happily ever after bc i like happily ever afters u___u

meanwhile there's something with suho and his four plus-puppies that are chinguline (the two plus-beagles chen and baekhyun and the plus-lab, chanyeol and....idk what doppar is yet) and...something.

any ideas on how to flesh stuff out ig?? i haven't started writing yet, except for tiny snippets that don't make sense...
