oh, yes, i see that--i didn't get what you were referring to. i said "in the west" because i was speaking explicitly from what i'd seen (primarily white people learning asian languages in the west) so i added the clarification because i didn't want to... overstate? like apply it everywhere when in reality it only applied to a specific situation. sorry for my oversights, and thank you for explaining your viewpoint.
