It’s been eight years since Yifan left Korea. He didn’t think it would take this long to come back, but he’s finally found enough courage to book a flight to Seoul. He’s finally breathing the sweet spring air, his fingertips still cold with winter hanging around the corners, barely leaving even though it’s time. He takes one last breath, trying to saviour the moment—or maybe to appreciate the difference since the last time he’s here— before ducking inside the waiting cab.

Yifan takes one last look inside the arrival hall before the cab drives off and he smiles, remembering the fond memory of packed airports, filled with fans trying to catch a glimpse of him, the flash of their cameras going off as he makes his way through the crowd. He misses it a little but he can’t say he doesn’t enjoy not having to put up appearances and simply taking his time walking through the terminals without being rushed by bodyguards or managers. He definitely does not miss the feeling of constantly looking behind his shoulders to see if his members are unharmed right behind him.

It is weird to stay in a hotel in Korea, Yifan thinks when all those years there was a place to go back to. But then again, hotels were a constant in his life back then too, back when he was Kris of EXO, leader of EXO-M. He plops down on the bed, and he attempts moves his arms and legs the same way one would when making a snow angel in the snow. He laughs at his silliness but then stops, smiling fondly at the memory. It might seem silly to others but he remembers how it was a game they played, pretending their clean white sheets are snow and rustling the perfect bedspread with their little game.





Yifan puts his bags down, not bothering to unpack when Baekhyun drags him out of the door and towards Chanyeol’s and Minseok’s room. Recently he’s been getting closer to Baekhyun and they’ve all agreed to room one K and one M member when they go for promotions overseas so it’s only natural that they room together.

Just as they are leaving their room, Joonmyun and Tao are also leaving theirs on the opposite side and they walk together towards the end where the rest would be with Baekhyun and Tao leading the way. Yifan catches Joonmyun’s eyes and he returns the smile on Joonmyun’s lips, reaching out to link is hands with Joonmyun, giving it a small squeeze before pulling back. Even if it’s only for a second, the pink hue creeping up Joonmyun’s cheeks as he bites his lips makes it all worth it.



He sits up immediately, smile turning into a straight line as he presses his lips together. It’s a habit now, pressing his lips together when he has nothing to say, when he’s trying not to say something that might be offensive, or when he’s trying to force a smile. He catches his reflection in the mirror on the other side of his room and it reminds him of Sehun, whose lips would press together and curl downwards at the ends often. Yifan rubs his face into his palms, trying to push the memory in the far corner and he decides that maybe staying cooped up like this is making him think of things he’s not ready to think about.

A good walk around Seoul, visiting old places to see if they are still around seems like a good idea and Yifan walks to the transparent glass separating his room from the bathroom. He shakes his head, unsure why hotels think that it’s a good idea to have see-through bathrooms when rooms are usually shared. He splashes his face with cold water, hoping it’ll be enough to keep himself fresh without a shower. He rubs the rough stubble on his chin but decides against shaving; besides there’s no one to tell him to shave anymore. There’s no one left to please.

Yifan takes a cab, trying to retrace his routes; places he used to go back when he was in Seoul. Eight years makes a lot of difference and half the shops have probably moved but at least now he’ll have all the time to explore. He no longer has to worry about fans following him and trying to take pictures or ask for autographs.



“Right before you have to go back to Korea, ask for an extension. Tell them you need to visit your family, spin a story so they would let you stay. It is better to proceed when they can’t get hold of you.”

“Can I at least tell my mem—“

“No. No one can know except for you and me. I know you trust them but they might let slip and before we can file a lawsuit, SM will already be making their moves with negative stories about you. You know we need to take them by surprise Yifan.”

Yifan knows he needs to do this but the phone call leaves him feeling uneasy. He knows that he needs to do it now or he’ll never find the courage to leave. He tried to a year ago but SM managed to convince him to come back but he knows it’s a mistake now. He thinks of all the people he’s leaving behind and he’s close to changing his mind but when he thinks of what he’s gone through the past year, it only strengthens his resolve. Now or never.




“I know you don’t want me here, but I missed you,” Yifan says.

“We can’t be seen together in public,” Joonmyun replies.

It’s not a definite yes but Joonmyun didn’t reject him either.

“How about my hotel room?” Yifan tries. “It’s private and there’s a lift by the back entrance away from where most of the other guests are. I have a spare key, we can go up separately.”



“I heard you’re dating,” Yifan asks softly, only earning a chuckle from Joonmyun. He misses that, the sound of Joonmyun’s laugh and the way his face pulls tight across the cheeks, making it seemed forced.

“You know how SM is like,” Suho says and Kris nods, of course he does. “They hoped that the news of me and Soojung dating would take the heat from Jeno’s scandal.”

“I heard about that, he really was seen coming out from the red-light district huh?” Yifan asks with amusement. He never thought the young trainee he met back then would pull something like this.

“Plenty of ways to get laid and he chose that one.”

There’s a reply itching to crawl out of Yifan’s throat but he tries to swallow it down with the beer in his hand until he meets Joonmyun’s eyes. The sparkle he remembers is still there and he forgot how vulnerable Joonmyun can look when his eyes get moist like this. The words are out before Yifan can think. “Like how we used to get laid?”

“Yifan…”

Yifan hates the way Joonmyun looks uncertain and he would have given up if he didn’t recognise the brief look that Joonmyun used to give him when they were both leaders of EXO. The memory seems to open up the floodgates and before Yifan realises it, tears are falling down his face as he mumbles apologies one after another.





“We are one! Hello, we are EXO!”

The voices of EXO fill the stadium followed by screams of their fans right after a remix performance of History. EXO are now men, but to the eyes of their fans, they’ll always be the awkward boys who transform into sexy beasts on stage. Ten years and their fans come and go but there are many who has been with them every step of the way ever since the first of their many teasers dropped on youtube. Eleven men on stage but the fans still remember when it was twelve boys on stage.

They start doing their individual introductions again—it is weird, but the fans think they’re just buying more time—this time, Tao starts to introduce himself as ABStyle Kungfu Panda Tao who likes taking walks alone. The fans laugh, remembering the innocent Tao they can’t help but notice the gap in between Suho and Chen.

Why are they standing apart? Are they fighting?

Fans start to speculate but they continue on with their introductions, D.O stumbling over his words and the fans and members laughing but it’s nothing new. They are all expecting it to happen anyways. The second introductions end with Chanyeol but then Suho starts to speak and they all focus on him. It is a huge change because just eight years ago Suho was still having trouble getting people to listen when he starts to talk but it comes with experience.

“Today, we have something special planned for you.” Suho pauses just for dramatic effect and for the screams to die down. “The song we’ll be performing after this is MAMA,” another pause and more screams, “and you know that this is the song where it all began.”

Suddenly the lights in the stadium dims and only the spotlight focused on the stage are on. A video starts playing on the big screen and fans start whispering and screaming, remembering the video as the intro to the MAMA music video ten years ago with the tree of life. But then the voiceover mentions twelve and half the stadium is surprised into silence and sniffing can be heard.

Maybe SM made a mistake, maybe they don’t have enough budget to record a new video. It opens up old wounds and even after eight years, the wound is still raw to the touch.

The video playback ends and suddenly, the trapdoor between Suho and Chen opens up and someone suddenly jumps up.

“Hello, I’m EXO’s Kris and I’m back from the galaxy.”
