"Detective Zhang, here's the case you wanted me to look up." Kim Jongdae, Zhang Yixing's assistant, neatly lays a load of files on his boss's desk. Yixing thumbs through the stack of papers and nods, dismissing Jongdae.

He opens the first file folder and flips through it quickly. Another suicide; Oh Sehun, 20. He skims through the documents, searching for information he has yet to have laid eyes on. Nothing new. Yixing repeats this process with the next five folders. Still, nothing new.

Loosening his tie, Yixing shoves the folders to one side of his desk and sighs. He slumps into his chair and rubs his temples. Every other week there's another suicide. The scenes have some differences, like a boyfriend two seconds away from preventing the death or a bottle of under the table medication at the site, but the result is always the same. Models ending their lives; left with marks and patches on their skin, similar to bruises. But more like rotting flesh, Yixing discerns.

Yixing buzzes Jongdae through the telecomm, asking him to bring in some coffee and a sandwich. He decides to take a break. Yixing turns on the television for some background noise. Three knocks on his door and Jongdae comes in with their lunch. He hands Yixing his coffee, reminding him to be careful because it's hot. Yixing sips on it and smiles. Two and a half sugars and three creams--only Jongdae can get it right.

They eat in silence while the television runs. A shampoo commercial comes on and Yixing's ear twitches. He glances at the tv and catches sight of the nation's It-Boy, Park Chanyeol. His smile is gleaming and hair luxurious. Jongdae notices Yixing's stare and follows his line of sight, chuckling at what he sees. "That Chanyeol kid is quite attractive, isn't he?"

Yixing takes the last bite of his sandwich, eyes never leaving the tv--or Chanyeol. "He's more than just attractive. He's beautiful. Too much, maybe." Jongdae looks back at Yixing quizzically, asking, "What do you mean by that?"

There's a flicker of something dark in his eye, but then the commercial ends and Yixing is slowly brought back from his entranced state. He wipes the crumbs off his mouth and cleans up his table.

"Simply that," Yixing says whilst rising from his seat to re-do his tie. "Park Chanyeol is beautiful. And he's our wildcard."

* * * * *

Throughout the course of two weeks, Yixing invests himself in the country's number one idol, Park Chanyeol. He keeps tabs on the boy's schedules, his events, his commercials and projects. He learns that behind the perfect image the country has grown to love, Chanyeol is vain and cruel. Not surprising given the industry he's in, but to what extent his vanity leads him to is the main question.

Yixing sends Jongdae to do a background check on the boy, and the full report he receives confirms all his suspicions.

During one lunch break, Jongdae notices Yixing's increasing interest in the idol as he catches his boss staring intently at a picture of Park Chanyeol on his computer screen. "You seem very…enamoured," Jongdae says from behind Yixing, placing a coffee on his desk.

"I'm intrigued," Yixing murmurs between sips of coffee. "His bodily movements aren't in tandem with his bone structure. It's not easy to catch, but his balance is off."

After another week and one more suicide, Yixing gathers what he feels to be sufficient evidence in explaining all these suicides. He had a hard time wrapping his head around it at first, but now it's crystal clear. The question of how far one's vanity can take you…Yixing never expected the answer to be hell.

Which is where all these models were headed towards.

Yixing had found one common link between all the unexplained suicides--a beauty clinic named Star Museum. It is managed and owned by the famous cosmetologist, Kim Minseok. Yixing pressed for a background check on this man as well, but nothing came up aside from the basic youngest millionaire in the city. His information was sealed tight and that was the first warning sign for Yixing, though he couldn't be sure. Yixing isn't one to rely on gut instinct alone. Concrete evidence is what he needed.

Contacting his colleagues that had connections within the cosmetology business, Yixing reached out to Lu Han who, with his networking, was able to obtain some information on Star Museum and its owner.

"That rat bastard," Lu Han had spit out over the telephone. "His cash is cold and dirty. Milking desperate teens with insecurities and desires for beauty."

"I need more than that," Yixing said softly. "Any real violations?"

Yixing could hear the lighting of a cigarette over the line, and then a reply, "I don't know how legit it is, but I know he went to an international school in New Zealand. I'm friends with some of the people he studied with. Anyways, heard through the vine that this Minseok guy traffics fucking baby parts for his clients," a sound of inhalation and Yixing can almost smell the expelled smoke. "Also smuggles illegal substances into the city. Hard hitting anaesthesia, with stuff like mephedrone and shit. He doesn't understand the intensity of the flame he's playing with."

Their conversation ended with more of Lu Han going on and bad mouthing Kim Minseok. Yixing had thanked him and took down numbers of people he could contact who had deeper information on the accusations Lu Han laid out.

Yixing made a few more calls and received the same testimonies. Angry, disgusted, and shocked people; all whom knew Kim Minseok personally. And of course, the main reason why they never brought it up: to protect themselves. Their businesses had been funded by the wicked man himself. Truly disgusting.

Staring at the photographs of the deceased bodies sprawled on his table, Yixing studies them carefully. Oh Sehun, 20, naked body crumpled on the bathroom floor. Deep purple patches mixed with a blue shade against his white, pale skin. The flash of the camera only emphasized the stark difference of color. It makes Yixing feel sick. Kim Jongin, 21, half clothed body spread out on a bed. The same discoloured patches littering all over his skin. Huang Zitao, 20, body bent over the kitchen table. White foam around the curves of his mouth, but still, the same patches. Yixing estimates the marks to be anywhere from an inch to two inches.

He flips through more snapshots of the other suicides and it's all the same thing. Yixing is at a loss for words. Attaining beauty at the cost of one's health and well being. Is it really worth it? For what, momentary fame and a few spreads across a magazine?

Yixing tucks that thought away in the back of his mind and focuses on the images before him. The marks indeed are not bruises. His guess was correct--rotting flesh. If what Yixing has gathered turns out to be true, then Kim Minseok has been using illegal, untested substances on his clients. Sure, the outcome is perfect and desirable at first. But it's clear the effect doesn't last long. And the result is even worse. With excessive plastic surgery, the body begins to break down. There's only so much the human body can take.

Lu Han's words resurface in Yixing's mind. He doesn't understand the intensity of the flame he's playing with.

Three knocks on the door and Jongdae walks in, coffee in hand. He places it on Yixing's desk and turns on the tv. An energy drink commercial comes on, endorsed by Park Chanyeol. Yixing's head whips up. "Jongdae, isn't Park Chanyeol filming something tomorrow at the museum nearby?"

"I believe so. Why do you ask?"

Yixing folds his hands onto the table, mouth in a tight line. "It's time to use our wildcard."

* * * * *

When Yixing arrives at the site of Park Chanyeol's filming, he finds that the boy is taking a thirty minute break for costume change and rest. He shows the staff his department badge and gains access to the shoot, making his way to Chanyeol's fitting room. On the way there he hears the staff's hushed whispers about a certain Byun Baekhyun and his rising popularity; the reason for Park Chanyeol's current sour mood.

Gripping onto his package of documents, Yixing knocks on Chanyeol's door three times before entering. Chanyeol is seated in front of an illuminated mirror, sitting still and staring at his reflection. If he noticed Yixing walk into the room, he doesn't show it.

Yixing takes a seat beside Chanyeol and clears his throat, breaking the boy away from his reverie. He locks eyes with Yixing through the mirror, but doesn't question his presence. He gives Yixing a sad smile and continues to stare blankly at his own reflection.

"I'm a fan of yours," Yixing says softly. This manages to gain Chanyeol's attention, who's ears noticeably perk up at the recognition. He turns to Yixing and really looks at him, giving him a slight grin.

"I know it's hard," Yixing continues. "To try and impress everyone, to try and please everyone. But you're doing an amazing job." Chanyeol remains silent, but his expression changes, as if pondering the words he just heard. Yixing knows what he needs to say. He knows what words Chanyeol wants to hear. His ego, his vanity must be stroked in order for Yixing to get what he wants.

"You don't know shit about me."

Or maybe, Yixing doesn't.

Chanyeol scoffs and gets up to leave, so Yixing decides to get straight to the point. "Tell me about that clinic you visit regularly. Star Museum." Chanyeol freezes in his spot and lets out a nervous laugh. "What are you talking about?" he asks, whilst rubbing the back of his neck. "I don't visit any clinics."

Yixing rises from his seat as well, placing the folder he was holding into Chanyeol's limp hands. "Enclosed here in are all the documents stating why I believe Star Museum isn't as clean as it looks. Read it over, and think about it. Your whole past is documented in here as well, Park Chanyeol of Ulsan."

Chanyeol immediately stiffens at the mention of his hometown. "H-how," he croaks, but Yixing's already out the door.
