Yixing is first diagnosed with the blood coagulation disorder when he is ten years old, after his first nasty collision with an opposing team's midfielder that draws blood.

"Is there anything we can do about it?"

"He'll be fine," the doctors tell his father at the foot of Yixing's hospital bed, "as long as you keep him on blood transfusions for the rest of his life."

When Yixing raises his head to look at him, his father is frowning, face pale and pinched with worry. "And how much will that cost?"





"Soccer is a pretty high impact sport," his dad says, bent over the gurney railing, on the day Yixing gets out of the hospital. "You'll probably get hurt a lot if you aren't careful. Even if you are careful."

"I know," Yixing says, folding his hands in his lap.

"You still want to play?"

Yixing tilts his head, confused that his dad even has to ask, and says, "Of course."





Yixing's played on a local club soccer team probably since he could walk. His dad coaches the Machine of '91, a bunch of kids Yixing's age who took over the South Chinese league when they were nine. "If you want to play professionally in the future, though," the aunts and uncles around their sleepy town would always say, "you have to be noticed."

But who would notice some kid from Changsha with a 900-dollar price tag on his head because of all the blood transfusions he needed every month?

Saving grace comes in the form of Lee Sooman, who happens to see Yixing's team play when touring China. Yixing doesn't really know who he is until his father leans down to whisper in his ear at the bench. "He's the head coach for FC Seoul."

"You were pretty good out there," the man says, crouching down so he's eye level with Yixing.

"Thanks," Yixing says.

"You like soccer?"

"I want to do it for the rest of my life," Yixing blurts out, and then looks away, face burning.

"Would you like to come to Korea to play for me?" Mr. Lee says, the corners of his eyes crinkling when he smiles, and Yixing takes a deep breath and says, "Yes."





Which is how Yixing and his entire family move to South Korea when he's twelve years old. Korean is difficult to wrap his tongue around, but soccer is the same everywhere. There's one other Chinese kid training in FC Seoul's youth academy, which surprises Yixing, because he'd been expecting none.

"So what?" Lu Han asks Yixing appraisingly in perfect Beijing Chinese, the first time he sees Yixing giving himself an intravenous transfusion of fresh frozen plasma. "You're like a weird real life vampire?"

Yixing bares his teeth in a smile and chomps on air. "That's exactly what I am," he says, and Lu Han tosses his head back and laughs.
