da i completely disagree, it's not ooc at all. firstly, i think people sweep a broad variety of normal behaviors under the "frat bro" characterization which always baffles me because 90% of the fics i've read that have this so-called "douchebro characterization" contain completely normal interactions between friends. idk if anons have actually met frat bros irl but i went to a school with a really, really large greek population and i really couldn't disagree more with labeling the characterization as frat bro.

- nobody's binge drinking
- nobody's deliberately rude to people (beyond normal teasing)
- nobody's destroying property
- nobody's racist/homophobic/engaging in any sort of hazing behavior
- nobody's spoiled/coming from money/using their position to manipulate people

obviously there are guys in frats who are, you know, not like this, but since people are making the generalization that any sort of male friendship dynamic is "frat bro" i feel like there needs to be some sort of clarification that no, there's actually a vast difference between ~real frat bros~ and just... boys. and not even boys, necessarily, it's just a type of good friendship.

you watch interactions between the guys and they're exactly that: guys, who are friends with each other. that means giving each other shit and teasing each other. sometimes they're supportive, sometimes they say things to purposely embarrass each other. it's just normal friendship dynamics imo and certainly more realistic/probably closer to the reality than whatever ~sensitive~ guy characterization anons are looking for. that's more like wish fulfillment for a reader than actually being in character.

da ah lol i think i get what you mean! for me part of it is what you said, the fact that it's fic that's written in english sometimes means that some of the turns of phrase are more westernized than not. but ida with the assessment that some anons have brought up in the past that "only american frat dudes act like this" because imo a lot of the stuff they're complaining about is normal friend behavior and that kind of thing is pretty universal regardless of what country you're from or what country you live in, if that makes sense? like lol as if korean dudes are not capable of being assholes about teasing each other or participating in underage drinking or playing stupid games and betting on them, you've seen exo's well circulated predebut videos you know the dumb shit they're capable of

lmao that's fair i suppose although i think you're vastly overestimating the differences between men (and just people in general) from culture to culture. i'm sure there are nuances that are missed just by virtue of being in english or whatever, and the jokes are going to be english because a lot of stuff like that just straight-up doesn't translate, but lol, other than societal standards for manners/etc, human interaction isn't that different anywhere you go, especially when you're around friends, where things tend to be more relaxed anyway.

but a lot of anons complain about this when they're specifically set in western aus, and it's like... what were you really expecting?

People have this misconception that all frat dudes are dickwads...It's a culture that can def breed dickish behavior but most frat guys are really nice.

People also fail to take into account that there are a bunch of different types of frats. Service frats, religious frats, etc. You don't have to be rich to be in a frat.

That said, a lot of frat guys are loudly douche to/with their friends....exactly like the beagles are.

I also think it's more about having a life long brotherhood, similar to what exo have. So it makes sense that in an au/ar you'd want them to have that same kinda binding connection. At least that's what I like most about the beagle frat dynamics! Loud dickish buds who are gonna be bonded for life uwu
