it's basically a combination of article mentions, tags being searched, etc. that's also why you often see idols involved in crimes rise in the rankings too, it's not necessarily a marker of popularity the way people claim it is. still idol fans are intent on manipulating it because they recognize the value in bragging points for those who aren't aware how it's all calculated lol
