jongin becomes the youngest quidditch player in a century. sehun's never been big on quidditch but he loves going to games now that he can watching jongin, cheering with daeun and waving his black and gold banner excitedly.

joonmyun, on the other hand, is furious. this is his second year as a chaser, but sehun heard him bragging at gatherings about how he was planning to talk the team captain into letting him be the new seeker this year. and then jongin swept in and beat him to the position before tryouts could even be held. seven years of practice, joonmyun complains, all for nothing. (sehun's not really sure if joonmyun can count the years on expensive toy brooms as practice, but he's not going to argue.)

"are you sure about kim jongin?" sehun's father asks him during christmas break, and sehun knows who to blame. "it doesn't sound like we'll be able to use him."

sehun bites his lip, clutching his hands together under the table. just spending several days away from jongin has been awful. he can’t imagine not being allowed to be his friend at all. "i can't stop being friends with him now," he points out. "it would look strange."

"he's right," his mother says. "hufflepuffs are loyal."

"as long as you remember who you're really loyal to," his father tells him.

sehun nods. "yes, sir."

but it's hard, following those loyalties blindly now that he's in a place where not everyone thinks like his parents. where the people his parents would never want him anywhere near are some of the ones he likes best of all.

"good job, befriending a mudblood," joonmyun tells him once, smiling and sincere. "i couldn't do it. you're better at this than i am."

sehun smiles weakly. the thing is, he likes daeun--likes how nice she is, how she makes him laugh and has a million questions and never makes him wonder what to say next. she's one of the smartest witches in his class and has to help him with schoolwork way more than he has to help her. can everyone really be right about her not deserving to be at hogwarts just because her parents are muggles?

zitao is joonmyun's friend first. he's the newest member of the quidditch team, before jongin, and credits his one-on-one flying lessons with joonmyun for getting him his spot as beater.

"he's a powerful pureblood," joonmyun says when sehun asks him about it. "we could use him on our side. you should become his friend and help me convince him." but there's a strange look in joonmyun's eyes every time he's around zitao, or even when he just hears zitao's name mentioned--one sehun eventually realizes is genuine affection.

zitao attaches himself to sehun and jongin both the instant jongin joins the team, but sehun tries to keep his distance, afraid to trust anyone joonmyun approves of, no matter how nice zitao seems to be.

it all comes to a head on halloween, when the troll on the loose runs into the bathroom where zitao's huddled in one of the stalls, crying about something sehun's snapped at him. after sehun and jongin run to his rescue and all three of them fight off the troll, the first thing zitao does is make sure sehun is okay, even after the way sehun's treated him the past few weeks.

zitao is never going to be like joonmyun, sehun realizes in that moment, and he, jongin and zitao all become inseparable after that.
