yixing lives in fear of someone knowing, but lu han simply pats him on the knee and reminds him that he’s known yifan forever. “that’s not what i mean,” yixing says, and lu han chuckles quietly. lu han stares out the window where the sun hovers just under the horizon, while yixing thinks about the way his bed is still neatly made.
yixing has always considered himself a careful person, at least when it came to matters of the heart. friends are precious, and he will never forget his fans, but even so, he suddenly realises he never noticed how much jongdae’s smiles in the morning work their way onto yifan’s grumpy face, or how familiar the sight of zitao curling against minseok’s lap has become. sehun always brings at least three bottles of water to practice, and joonmyun carries around a pack of gum and is never shy about sharing, and kyungsoo snaps at whoever was unfortunate to leave the wrapper lying around. he likes the way baekhyun smiles at everyone, and even though his tone is biting when he tells chanyeol his voice is annoying, there’s a softness in his eyes that says he’d miss it if it were ever gone.
“do you want to practice together, yixing-hyung?” jongin comes up quietly behind him in the hallway, and yixing nearly jumps a foot in the air before he turns.
“ah, i’m…”
“busy?” jongin shrugs, and there is no real disappointment in his eyes, only a worry that cuts yixing to the bone. “you’re busy a lot, lately. is it family?”
not really, yixing thinks, and bites his lip. “yeah,” he lies, not meeting jongin’s eyes. “i’ll text you…later?”
but later never comes, because just as lu han is telling him that it wasn’t really a lie, he’ll be able to spend more time with his family after this, his phone dings with an email from his lawyer, asking him if he can take a call.
they exchange a look.
this is their secret.
“we’re ready to take this to court whenever you are,” his lawyer says.
yixing’s mouth goes dry.
“next—” lu han swallows, licks his lips. “next week.”
“next week,” yixing repeats. “we’re ready next week.”

“so when are you leaving?” yifan asks this as if he were asking when they were taking a vacation or when the next flight to yet another concert was or when they were going out to see the movie that had come out two months ago but they’d never found the time to see.
perhaps it’s because of the calmness he asks it with, but yixing is just as calm when he says “next week,” and suddenly, there is a look of terror on yifan’s face that yixing has never seen before, and he wishes he could wake up and everything was a nightmare and they are still fresh-faced and twenty and with half their lives in front of them.
but then it is gone, and if it weren’t for that second being ingrained in the bottom of his heart, yixing would’ve pretend he’d imagined it. yifan smiles.
“good luck,” he says, and clasps yixing’s shoulders, his hands broad and fingers strong. yixing looks at his hand, and places his hand on his. yifan looks at him. there is a grim cant to his lips. “if you need anything, if i can do anything, just tell me.”
“but…” yixing falters.
“we’re still friends,” yifan says. “no matter what. and until you’re gone, i’m still your duizhang.”
a thousand protests run through yixing’s mind, and a hundred more make their way to his tongue, but yifan only tightens the fingers on his shoulder, and yixing shuts his eyes.
“what sort of duizhang are you?” he murmurs, and then chuckles because it sounds like something lu han would say. he looks up, and yifan’s eyes seek his out. “thank you,” he says. “duizhang.”
kris chuckles. “欲求千里目 更上一层楼.” if you want to see further, climb higher - but yixing wonders if he's climbing up at all.
i love, love, love that moment where lu han speaks for yixing. it's such a powerful representation. these are fantastic anon, thank you so much for sharing (especially in the heat of all these silly m/k arguments).
