Kyungsoo despised the whole soulmate thing. To be born with one half of a drawing etched onto your dominant hand's wrist and to spend the rest of his life searching for the other half. As if completing this stupid tattoo-like drawing would change the whole world.

Kyungsoo was happy with his life now. Sure, it's a little odd to not have your soulmate beside you at his age but he's only twenty-five and he didn't think that he wanted to promise the rest of his life to someone he'd never met before. He liked the idea of dating. Of getting to know someone and then courting them, spending time together before deciding whether they wanted to promise the rest of their lives to each other. It was a silly idea in a world like this, he knew, but he didn't care if he had to see the world in gray-scale until the end of time.

He wanted to be able to choose.

Dating had been largely frowned upon back in the olden days when people were expected to be celibate until they found the one they were meant for but, like all things in life, that had changed over the past decade or two and while no one got stoned for dating anymore, those dates never went very far. Many people thought that it was still rather disgusting to let non-soulmate partners get married. There were a few countries like Canada that allowed the marriage of people who weren't soulmates but Kyungsoo knew that as long as he stayed in South Korea, he'd be expected to be single for the rest of his life or to find his soulmate and settle down.

He sighed to himself, frowning over his cup of coffee. His latest blind date that he'd met on the internet was around ten minutes late. Maybe he should just leave. He sighed again, setting his coffee down on the table before looking out the window, at the raindrops pattering against the glass, the dark grey clouds looming heavily over the city as thunder rolled and lightning flashed in the distance.

Well, the weather probably contributed to his date's tardiness.

He took a novel out of his bag, sinking into the cushions, glad that he'd been able to take one of the more comfortable seats before the college students had nabbed it. He had nothing better to do anyways.

A few pages later, he saw a man stumble into the cafe out of the corner of his eyes. He looked a little like a drowned rat, soaked from head to toe. His hair hung limply, fringe sticking to his forehead, and water dripped off his sweater. He looked around the cafe, brightening a little when he saw Kyungsoo. The college students gave him a look as he walked past them, leaving wet footprints behind him.

"Hi, I'm sorry that I'm late. You must be Kyungsoo," he said with a smile. He was fairly good-looking even when he look like someone had attempted to drown him. Chiseled jaw, high cheekbones, and a mischievous lilt to his lips.

"And you must be Jongdae," said Kyungsoo, shaking Jongdae's offered hand.

It was then, at that very moment, that colour started seeping into the edges of Kyungsoo's vision. Kyungsoo, startled, dropped Jongdae's hand immediately and as soon as he did, the colour faded away again.

He looked up at the other man, mouth slightly open with shock, only to be met with a similar expression. Jongdae snapped out of first, reaching to grab Kyungsoo's right hand, pushing down the sleeve that covered his wrist. When they touched, the drawing on Kyungsoo's skin glowed pleasantly and Kyungsoo could only look at it with wide eyes.

This. This wasn't what he was expecting out of today's date.

632 words, sorry.

Yixing has always been Special.

Ever since he could remember, the numbers were ever-present. He didn’t realize until age 10 that other people couldn’t see them. And it wasn’t until age 17 that he understood what it meant.

Kim Joonmyun was his deskmate in his second year of high school. He was kind, and would often remind Yixing of the homework they had due that day to make sure he didn’t forget anything. Yixing felt a ping of sadness whenever he peaked at Joonmyun’s counter and saw the dwindling days, hours, minutes. He tried not to get too close in case of the worst.

Day 0 for Kim Joonmyun arrived on a Thursday. Yixing kept sneaking peaks at the 2 hrs… 1 hr… 55 minutes… that was behind his deskmate’s head. This was the first time he ever saw someone with the numbers so close to zero. What was going to happen, he wondered, feared. Joonmyun kept looking back at him with curiously.

“do I have something on my face?”

“no.”

He was to polite to ask outright why Yixing was acting so weird and staring at him today.

30 seconds…

Yixing held his breath and involuntarily found himself scooting his chair away from his neighbor. Is it a death clock? What is going to happen at zero?

Joonmyun no longer bothered to look back when he caught Yixing staring. Yixing couldn’t peal his eyes away, not even when a student knocked on their classroom door and walked in.

“Kim Jongdae from year 1, class 2. I’m here to invite you to see our class’s performance this weekend!”

Yixing and Joonmyun both looked at the underclassman. Particularly he noted how this Kim Jongdae’s eyes sparkled and how his words stuttered when his eyes locked with Kim Joonmyun’s. Yixing could feel the electricity, even if it was second hand, and that’s how he knew. These were soulmate clocks.

Years later, he is reassuring Jongdae at his wedding, just half an hour before the time printed on the lace invitations.

“Trust me, you’re not making a mistake. Joonmyun isn’t backing out of this either.”

“Thanks, hyung. You better get to your seat and go back to greeting people.”

Kim Minseok was his favorite sunbae in high school, but unfortunately they lost touch once Minseok went to the army. Minseok spent his first year after his discharge studying abroad in china. Even though he and Yixing haven’t sat face to face in four years, they’ve been exchanging texts and keeping tabs on each other’s social network profiles. Minseok had a new boyfriend, which Yixing assumed would be like his other boyfriends : a dead end.

When minseok first shook hands with yixing 4 years ago, the numbers above his head were all zero. Yixing wondered about his first love, and if minseok realizes that every relationship he’s attempted has been half-hearted at best.

“This one’s different. I think he’s here to stay.” he texted back three months ago, “i’m bringin him to jongdae and joonmyumn’s wedding.”

Yixing spotted the familiar silhouette almost immediately when he stepped back into the chapel. The backview of the happy couple, Yixing wondered how it would work out for his hyung. Hoped that he found a love that was even a quarter of what jongdae had found. His boyfriend was taller, and had his hair died a strawberry blonde. He stood out in a sea of traditional black hair.

Yixing’s heart sank when he noticed the numbers above Minseok’s faceless guest. 17 seconds…

He kept his eyes focused on the people in their immediate vincinity. Who could it be? Who was Minseok’s boyfriend’s soulmate? And how is he going to break the news without seeming crazy to Minseok?

Minseok turned around first. It was just a peak over his shoulder, a signal that he had checked out of whatever conversation was going on between the small group of them. His eyes lit up when he caught Yixing’s eyeline. Minseok turned to his date and whispered in his ear with a bright smile. He’s over there, Yixing could make out from his lips. His head was pounding and all the color seemed to drain from the world.

No…

Oh please god.

Sehun is scanning the crowd for his shorter boyfriend, and for a second his eyes lock with a wide-eyed male and in the next he sees Junmyeon and the world starts blooming out in colour. The sudden shock from the normal, safe, black and white to the vibrant and colorful causes him to stumble backwards, into other people, and before he runs away, frightened, his eyes meet the stranger again and those wide eyes look just as confused.

His boyfriend is calling his name after him as he flees the scene, but Sehun pretends he can’t hear him -- pretends he can’t feel the strangers eyes boring into his neck.

Instead of running to his shared dorm, Sehun finds himself in front of his parents door, and a wave of familiarness and safety washes over him like a tide and once in his mother’s warm embrace he breaks into tears.

After what feels like forever of crying, his mother has finally succeeded in calming him down and guided him to sit down in the beige plush couch. And as she’s sitting down, cupping his hands in hers, Sehun almost feels like bursting out into a new round of tears.

“Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?” Her voice is laced with worry, as well as her eyes and the way her mouth is slightly downturned.

“I…. can see in colour now, mum.”

There’s a gasp from beside him and all he wants to do is bury his face in his hands and sink down between the couch’s pillows, but his mother has an iron grip on him and he knows better than try to defy her.

“And… the worst part of it, mum… It’s not hyung.” Sehun can’t stop the hiccup and his voice cracks. “It’s not Junmyeon hyung, mum. It’s not…” He’s closer to his mid-twenties than he is to his years as a young boy, but his kind, always so kind, mother still hugs him and let’s him cry against her chest as if he was eight years old again and had just fallen off his bicycle and scraped up his knee.

For three days Sehun ignores his responsibilities and stays at his childhood home and ignores all of Junmyeon’s and his other friends’ calls, his phone turned off and most days spent helping around in the house and the garden. It’s the most he has ever stayed away from his hyung without a call or text, but he knows that it’s what he needs.

His mother, who already met her soulmate as a child, teaches him all the name of the colours in their home, in the garden, in the supermarket just ten minutes promenade away.

He dreams of those wide, wide, eyes every night.

the giver au

When Minseok met the new boy in town (all smiles, tall as a lamppost) he had to close his eyes for a second. Not because Chanyeol's grin was blinding or anything, although it nearly was that he could eclipse the sun if he wanted to. But the shade of his shirt burned his retinas, like if the sensation of touching fire could be applied to his eyes, this would be it.

"Is there something on my shirt?" Chanyeol asked and when the rest of Minseok's friends hadn't given signals they've noticed something strange, Minseok just shook his head, told himself to forget about it.

Now being pressed against the wall, Chanyeol's thighs between his, hands and fingers tugging at shirts and buttons, Minseok saw it again: the fire in Chanyeol's hair, the glow of his skin, the pristine white of his shirt.

"Can't you see it?" Minseok gasped as Chanyeol licked a stripe from the base of his neck up to his jaw. He grasped at Chanyeol's collar and tried to pull him away.

Chanyeol grinned down at him and he wanted to punch his face. "See what, hyung?" And took them both in his large hands.

Lu Han crawls through the ashes for his love.

A beautiful house on the green meadow. His mother always asked him if it was too small but to them it was perfect. Just the right size for Lu Han and his love.

He pushes his way through what was formerly the study. It was the study wasn’t it? His love used to spend the mornings singing to the sun while enjoying a cup of black coffee. Then he would go down and make breakfast for the both of them. Everyone would joke that Lu Han was lucky to have him, but then his love would shoot right back. Saying that he was the luckiest person in the world to have Lu Han.

Through the ash Lu Han finds the coffee mug. The one his love uses every morning with the little chip on the rim.

Lu Han holds the mug close to his chest. Hands stained black leaving all kinds of unseemly smudges on the mug. It was okay though, he could clean it up as soon as he found his love.

The crews had left long ago, leaving Lu Han on his knees to sift through the ash alone with the stars on a muggy summer night. As soon as he finds his love Lu Han definitely needs a shower.

It’s not easy work and Lu Han feels the sweat creep ever closer to his eyes. His palms are smudged an ugly black with soot so he uses the back of his hand to wipe it away. His eyes are are definitely dry, it’s only sweat that’s all. Sweat rolling down his temples and cheeks, lord knows how long he’s been out here digging.

It will all be okay though. As soon as he finds his love they can go back to laughing over his terrible beatboxing. As soon as he finds his love they can go back to singing to the birds in the mornings with black coffee.

Lu Han crawls through the ashes of his former love.

Idols are a beautiful abnormality in a world of greys, sirens tinted with the slightest bit of color at the corners of their eyes and in locks of shamelessly bright hair. Of all the reasons Lu Han signs up for a contracted shelf life a country away, this is the most important.

"It's why people don't particularly like them," the casting scout explains to him as she hands over her card. SM Entertainment, it reads. He knows it should be pink, has seen traces of color during the concerts he livestreams on his computer, but the cardstock in his hand is as grey as the concrete. "It's an illusion, you're not supposed to see color unless you meet that someone special."

And yet nothing explains the way crowds of fans all simultaneous see the world in dull pastels and clouded hues. A miracle, they call it.

Lu Han accepts -- of course he accepts -- and imagines himself in a world of color. The world of idols. He dreams of walking in through the frosted doors of the company building and seeing colorful paintings, the pink logo of the company.

But just like when he first stepped out of the airport all those months ago, heart shoved into his throat because his chest was so full of expectation, all he sees is grey.

A passing stranger -- another trainee, probably, he looks so young -- stops in his tracks, cocks his head in a way that makes his oversized ears stand out even more.

"New guy?" he asks, sounding neither particularly cruel or sympathetic. Lu Han wonders how many new guys he's seen with those cool eyes.

When Lu Han nods, the other smiles tightly. Hints of brown start creeping into Lu Han's field of vision, starting from the strands of the trainee's hair, but it stays a dull muted color. Lu Han knows the surprise on his face is all too obvious when the other begins to beam.

"Yeah, I have that effect," the guy says cheekily, reaching out for Lu Han's arm, "and I bet you will too. You look the type."

Lu Han doesn't even have the chance to stumble over Korean in an attempt to answer, barely has a chance to formulate one in Mandarin before the trainee starts dragging him down the hallways. He almost calls out for him to stop, but more and more colors are creeping into his vision and he stares wide-eyed at the door they all seem to be reaching to him out from.

"Feast your eyes," his surprise escort says, pulling away from Lu Han and resting his hand on the door handle. His smile is brighter than ever, and Lu Han can see the obnoxious bright orange of his hoodie by this point. As the boy opens the door, another tumbles out, his hand still on the other handle.

"Chanyeolie," the shorter trainee says, thick brows narrowed. His skin is pale, his shirt a bright yellow. The colors burst, lingering behind Lu Han's eyelids as he tries to blink them away in surprise. It's brighter than any concert he's ever watched.

It's magic.
