Chanyeol and Yixing never had much to do with each other. Where Yixing was all about gracious moves inside their practice room, Chanyeol lacked coordination, performing with moves that had a lot of rough edges and lacked polish. Where Chanyeol had been excited to improve his rapping skills, Yixing wants nothing to do with it while he strolls away, mp3 in hand, earphones always a tangled mess while he listens to his pop-ish Chinese songs. Yet both were in the same group, in each other’s presence, in each other’s space. So far all they had in common was the eagerness to learn, develop, evolve but it was enough to put them in a room together trying to compose. Give it a shot, why not? Jongdae had been the one to proposition, to link them together and yet, after a few sessions, he was nowhere to be seen. Jongdae has too much on his mind, on Zhang Liyin and Breathe.

Chanyeol and Yixing were awkward in their different ways but that never stopped Chanyeol from trying. Baekhyun, as always, had been the one to start it. Baekhyun, whom Yixing hated at first, had been able to pierce through the ice wall between him and Yixing faster than Chanyeol, who had never gone further than polite small talk with Yixing in the hallways way before debut. Baekhyun had a knack for being playful, pushy and bratty but then Chanyeol and Jongdae shared a nice chunk of those traits too (they were beagleline for a reason). So if Baekhyun lately had a thing for blowing and touching Yixing’s neck when he least expected, Chanyeol would join him too. They would cackle together while Yixing jumped out of his skin and nursed his neck surprised and annoyed until he found out the culprit. Then Yixing would smile and laugh with them saying "You shouldn’t bother your hyung!", lips jutted out and pouting while he spoke Korean with a heavy accent, before he returned to his task, only to be bothered again by both of them a few minutes later. Where Chanyeol tried to be playful and loud to get closer, Yixing never seemed to mind it, always greeting him with his permanent half-lidded eyes and bright smile, while Chanyeol was sure Junmyeon would punch him square in the nose if he ever tried it with him. And maybe when he noticed all these differences, Chanyeol became entranced. So he started watching.

He’d watch attentively when Baekhyun would catch Yixing to tell a joke and how he would put his hands on the small of Yixing’s back and his stomach, trying to straighten him up while he doubled in laughter and how Baekhyun’s hands would linger, both acting naturally as if they belonged there. From his usual spot on the big sofa in the living room Chanyeol could see from the corner of his eyes Jongdae and Yixing gathering on the dining table for another Mandarin tutoring session. He’d see the way Jongdae would stare at Yixing’s lips as Yixing taught him the correct pronunciation of words and Chanyeol would wonder if Jongdae’s gaze on his lips ever meant anything else. And when Luhan came along he and Yixing would start bickering, the older of the two tickling the other one in retaliation until his knees gave out and they ended up rolling on the floor, tangling in each other into a mess of limbs until their chests heaved with gulps of breath and tiredness started to seep in. While Yixing always seemed absent-minded of everyone’s touch, seemingly comfortable enough with anyone, Chanyeol started to feel the rumble of jealousy inside his heart. He’d never admit that he minded those touches more than Yixing did, he couldn’t. So he did what he knew best, he pushed those feelings down and locked them away.

But another part of Chanyeol couldn’t help but feel curious. What if it was Chanyeol initiating those touches? How would Yixing react? He didn’t pay attention before but now he had to try it and see it with his own eyes. He was always aware of the space between him and Yixing and tried to keep both of their personal spaces free of each other but now he had experiments to do.

The first opportunity came in the form of another jam session between the two of them. It was always awkward, from his part he always waited for Jongdae to come, the rare times he would appear, and when he didn’t Chanyeol and Yixing would both work quietly in their corners, every once in a while breaking the silence to ask for each other’s opinions (that was more of Yixing’s thing, Chanyeol never asked him for anything so it was weird when he broke the silence by his own free will).
