it was originally supposed to be like a dating site, and the way it works is it connects to your facebook (doesn't make any posts or anything), and it just starts showing you people (men, women, or both) in the age range and distance you specified (mine is 18-25, and 25 miles). it uses your facebook and highlights if they have any mutual friends or mutual interests of yours it highlights that but it's fairly common to get people with 0 mutual friends and 0 interests

and then it just shows you their picture, their little blurb and you either swipe left or swipe right for them. right means you like them, left means you don't, if you swipe left on someone then they disappear forever and can't talk to you. if you swipe right on someone and ONLY if they swipe right on you can you guys talk. i really like that because it keeps away so many unsolicited messages and shit from people
