"Jongdae, stop staring out the window like a zombie, it's starting to seriously creep me out!"

Chanyeol shoves at his friend's shoulder with an elbow and frowns with concern. Jongdae turns to face him, eyes widening, before he breaks out into a sheepish smile.

"Stop being such a gumdrop, Chanyeol, I'm not going nuts or anything. It's just so…" Jongdae peers out the window again and takes a deep breath. "…fucking cool up here."

It's been a week and a half since they left Earth to settle on the new human habitat the government's been developing for the past fifteen years. Chanyeol and Jongdae weren't even born yet when the news came out about the impending asteroid attack on Earth set to hit a few decades later. It took a few years and a lot of political turmoil, but the all the nations agreed on the construction of a new home on Mars. The research as of that point had suggested its ability to support living organisms and the human race was running on a tight schedule. Development of the new shelter started the year Chanyeol and Jongdae turned one.

Everything's taken some getting used to. The gravity gauge went out that morning and everyone on the ship spent the half an hour floating around the hallways, some shrieking with fear and other giggling with at their newfound weightlessness. The food isn't so great either, but with limited fresh vegetation (no one thought of early harvesting what with the chaos of moving billions of people across planets) it's no real surprise this has been the third day straight of canned mystery gunk and jelly beans. Of course, the really good stuff is all reserved for the upper class—the ones settled closer to the inner core of the station.

Jongdae and Chanyeol are lounging in their shared bedroom, barely large enough to fit one person but expected to fit two. They agreed on the living arrangements a few months ago, when their official settlement papers came in. They'd been neighbors and best friends back on Earth ever since they were born and nothing would separate them, not even a global disaster.

"What do you wanna do today?" Jongdae asks for the eighth time that hour, detaching himself from the small window and lying back on the bed. Humming, he wiggles his feet to rest under Chanyeol's calves.

Chanyeol sighs. As it turns out, it's surprisingly boring on a massive space station where sixty percent of it is dedicated to top secret government stuff people like them aren't allowed to even know exist. There is an artificial ocean generator on the other side of the station with lots of cool animals but after Jongdae got stung on the dick by a jellyfish, he swore he'd never go near it again. They aren't old or rich enough for the one social club upstairs nor are they young enough to validate going down to the playhouse and throwing bouncy balls at the kids.

They haven't gotten their job assignments either—they won't until at least another ship comes in in a few days—so they're basically caught in boredom limbo.

"Wanna try to steal shit from that Kris kid? His face pisses me off for some reason."

Jongdae grins at him. "My favorite way to spend a Friday night."
