“Hyung,” Yixing slurred, still chewing and wiping the glaze off the corner of his mouth, “you’ve been visiting me a lot lately. Don’t you have a boyfriend now?”

“Ah that… well, Lu Han’s lunch break never matches with mine.”

“No friends from work? Are they bullying you?” Yixing teased.

“Ay, I only have you, Yixing,” Minseok joked back, shooting finger bullets.

He brought a box of fresh doughnuts along with a pair of iced americanos as a snack. Minseok only let Yixing open the box after promising that he’ll eat the packs of dried fruit and vitamins that he also brought by the end of the week.

“Yixing, you need to start taking care of yourself,” Minseok sighed. The suggestion came out more as a complaint than a scold. “Or at least find someone who will, so I don’t have to.”

Yixing chuckled then took a sip of his coffee to wash down the last mouthful of doughnut.

“Ah, so that’s the reason why everyone’s getting into relationships. Here I was naive enough to think that it had to do with love or something.”

“Are you kidding? I only suggested Lu Han move with me to Korea because I liked the way he folded laundry.”

Yixing guffawed and kept giggling past the wave of nausea that soured the sweet aftertaste of dessert in his mouth. Minseok’s throwaway comment left a crystal clear snapshot of him in domestic bliss in Yixing’s mind.

“But seriously Yixing, all you do is work. Are you happy?”

“My work makes me happy.”

“I know it does, but it can’t be the only thing that will bring you happiness?”

Yixing swallowed another sip of coffee, along with the sudden defensiveness that was prickling at his tongue.

“If you only had a few weeks to live, how would you spend it?”

The question was cliche, and it wasn’t like Minseok to pose these hypotheticals in conversation. Yixing honestly didn’t know how to answer. He’d probably like to spend that time the same way he’s spent the last few weeks - at work.

“I… I guess I’d go see my family. I haven’t seen them in a couple years.”

Yixing actually felt a hint of guilt, using his family as a cop-out answer.

Later, in bed, he settled his mind and decided, If I knew I’d only have a few weeks to live, I’d spend them telling the truth.

“Zhang Yixing!” Lu Han’s voice chimes clear and stern through the empty cafe. Yixing flinched, partially embarassed that he was caught trying to sneak out unnoticed from Lu Han’s sight. Letting out a deep sigh, he turned around to see Lu Han waving him over.

“Lu Han, why are you up so early? And… here?”

“I didn’t go to sleep. And I found this cafe a couple days ago. It’s the only 24 hour cafe in this neighborhood.”

“Yeah… this is one of my favorites.”

“Is it?” Lu Han’s sleepy features seemed to perk up at this information, mentally turning it around in his head for a moment before immediately collapsing into fatigue again. He slumped down, rubbing the area around his eyes with his fingers. “I haven't slept longer than thirty minutes at a time for the last two nights, and then things like this happen. I’m really starting to lose it.”

And it feels odd, but Yixing knows exactly what Lu Han is talking about. It goes beyond just regular empathy; he can really feel Lu han’s frustration and exhaustion down to his bones.

“I keep having these dreams, Yixing,” Lu Han confesses. They haven’t exchanged words since Namsan. What he’s about to say is going to shatter their fragile facade of distant formality, the same one that Yixing can only watch helplessly crumble in front of his eyes after all his struggles to keep it intact.

“I have these dreams. Then I wake up in these cold sweats, and Minseok looks at me. God, he looks at me like I’m halfway to death and trying to calm me back to sleep, but I feel like I did something wrong. I feel like I’m doing something wrong. And all I can say is that I’m ok, but I feel so empty and guilty and I have no idea why.”

“I-”

“And I just feel so delusional, you know? I keep trying to draw up these explanations in my head, these wild conspiracy theories, and all I conclude is that somehow you have the answers somehow. Or that you’ve known since the beginning it’ll turn out this way, and I’m the only idiot that couldn’t figure it out in time…”

Lu Han’s worked himself up into a frenzy of words now, spewing out words as fast as he can think them. Yixing hadn’t fully considered the ramifications of keeping Lu Han away from his soulmate, was too concerned with making sure his own feelings were well-concealed and with Minseok’s feelings. Hearing the words now doesn’t feel surprising. Everything actually feels overwhelmingly familiar, almost like he’s ranting at himself.

“...If I can just talk to you, that it’ll explain everything, then everything will be back to normal. Or that this incessant prickling I feel in my chest will go away if I can just see you…You know it’s funny, when I first came to Korea and seeing how Minseok always was talking about you and taking care of you, I was actually really jealous. I thought it was because you were taking away my boyfriend’s attention, but even with that jealousy, I still wanted to be your friend. I wanted some of your attention too. I wasn’t jealous of you, was I? I think I was was jealous of Minseok.”

“Lu Han, I’ll walk you home. Let’s go.”

“Tell me I’m not crazy, Yixing... or tell me I am, I don’t care. I just need your opinion on this.”

“Lu Han, stand up.”

“Please.”

“You’re not crazy.”

Minseok nudged Yixing, then pulled one of the earbuds out of his ears. The two first-year girls have been standing awkwardly in front of their desks for almost two minutes without any acknowledgement from Yixing.

“Let’s just go, Sehun…” Jongin slumped her shoulders and fiddled with the hem of her skirt. Sehun remained resolute and grabbed roughly at Jongin’s arm, shoving her reluctant friend in front of her.

“Not until you say what you came here to say,” Sehun muttered through gritted teeth.

Minseok, Jongdae, and Joonmyun were thoroughly captivated and amused by this scene playing out in front of Yixing, who has turned off his mp3 player and stopped scribbling in his notebook. His eyes were focused, but still a bit lost looking.

“Hi, Jongin. Hi, Sehun.”

“Sunbae, there’s a dance festival in Yong-in this weekend,” Jongin muttered, avoiding eye contact with Yixing. Minseok turned to Jongdae, whose face was contorting into a pink mess from trying not to laugh. Minseok pressed his lips into a thin line to stop himself from grinning. “My older sister is driving me, so I was wondering if you’d like to go with me.”

“Ahhhh, I heard about that! Sounds fun but I’m busy this Saturday.”

“OkayIdidit.Let’sgonow,Sehun.” With a swift and graceful spin on her heel, Jongin bolted towards the door, dragging Sehun behind her.

“Sunbae! Jongin-ah likes you.”

Even Sehun’s eyes turned round at the exclamation. Minseok guessed that she didn’t mean to say it. Regardless, Jongin looked mortified.

Yixing’s voice was calm and level as he politely rejected. Minseok can’t even remember the exact words because his mind was still swirling. This is the most drama that’s happened in front of his own eyes.

After school, it was still all anyone could talk about. Minseok took Yixing out alone to the convenience store to eat cup ramen and sodas.

“So why did you reject her? She’s really pretty and you guys seem to have a lot in common.”

“I didn’t really know her that well, outside of dance practice. Even there, we didn’t really talk much...”

“But you could get to know her through dating!”

“Besides, I think I heard one of the second years wanting to confess to Jongin.”

“What’s that got to do with you and Jongin though?”

“Baekhyun’s a friend…”

This was the first he’s heard of Yixing being friends with Baekhyun, not that they were unfriendly, but they didn’t really hang out ever. Minseok smiled to himself and patted Yixing on the shoulder, whose eyes were only focused on fishing out the last bits of noodles from his soup with his wooden chopsticks.

“You’re a good man, Zhang Yixing,” Minseok gloated.

“...Not really, hyung.” Yixing shrugged, taking a sip out of Minseok’s drink with a look of mischief.

True to Yixing’s words, Byun Baekhyun did confess to Kim Jongin later that month. And true to Minseok’s words, that was the first time Kim Jongin had laid eyes on Byun Baekhyun.

Last he heard, they were still dating.
