wc: 934

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 03:03 am (UTC)(link)His target is middle-aged, one of those wealthy, new-money generation folk that worked for the sake of wealth and not much else. Maybe he dabbled in philanthropy a little, Kyungsoo doesn’t know. and the shock is palpable in his voice when Kyungsoo appears in front of him one morning, freshly dead from a tiny, fatal clot.
The man breaks out of his hold, scrambling back among the leaves on his hands and knees until Kyungsoo yanks back on the string between them, tripping him flat down onto the ground.
“Please no,” the man shouts, “stay away from me!”
The man lifts his arms in defense, but he’s too slow. Kyungsoo moves in like hawk, snapping the invisible strand between his fingers like a neck and the man drops limp to the ground, dead.
Beneath the man, there’s sounds of a child crying and Kyungsoo knows there’s a pact to keep. As death there can’t be witnesses of any supernatural happenings and regretfully he searches for the string that’ll put the child out of misery too. To his surprise, there is none and Kyungsoo doesn’t know what to do.
There’s never been a time where a human being has not had a string, unless…
He leans down curiously and finds the child curled upon itself, sobbing quietly. He takes the child’s hand, the thing’s fingers are sticky with snot, tears, and god knows what else and leads him out of the forest. It’s not allowed, but god knows there’s never been a situation like this before.
When he’s not busy reaping, Kyungsoo likes to take naps by the neighborhood park. It’s not weird or anything, he just likes watching kids. Maybe in his past life, he had been a baby sitter or a school teacher, he’s not sure. He tries not to think about being alive as much as he can.
Reapers don’t actually sleep, which makes it increasingly hard for him to ignore Baekhyun who has grown to become the world’s most annoying ten year old.
“Hey Kyungsoo,” he asks.
“Kyungsoo,” he whines.
Kyungsoo takes the bait and raises his head from slumber. He gives Baekhyun a pointed stare, something they both have interpreted over time as acceptance to continue. “What is it like to die?”
He’s seen Kyungsoo at work too many times to not know what death is, but at the same time Kyungsoo ponders how to explain such a phenomenon.
It’s hard to describe to anyone what his job entails. The best way analogy Kyungsoo has come up with is something akin to a reverse EMS team. At any given time, there are thousands of strings, life strands if you will, tied to his hands. On the other end are people, living breathing people from all walks of life.
Occasionally, one of them will get caught somewhere- a traffic accident, a fire, a robbery, and Kyungsoo follows the taut line back to its source. It’s like being on call, when the body hits the floor he's there to mop it up.
Death should never be late.
But it also means that Kyungsoo is left with an ample amount of free time.
“I asked my mom why you didn’t talk to me and she said that maybe you can’t talk. She said maybe you didn’t have vocal chords or something so I shouldn’t be rude to you and keep asking you to talk,” Baekhyun continues babbling and before Kyungsoo can slip back into invisibility, Baekhyun pushes a notepad and pen into his hands. “But I told her that we needed some way to talk so she gave me this!”
Kyungsoo stares dumbly at the pen and paper, but Baekhyun keeps pouting at him expectantly
Kyungsoo hasn’t used his voice in half a century. There’s never been a need to.
“Is this one mine?” Baekhyun suddenly pipes up, shrinking back when Kyungsoo snatches his hand back roughly. “Wait lemme see! Please,” Baekhyun whines all bright eyes and wibbling mouth. Kyungsoo has to hand it to the kid, he’s learned fast.
Kyungsoo grudgingly lowers his hand again, letting Baekhyun’s chubby little fingers trace the threads in awe. He tugs on the strings, laughing at Kyungsoo’s startled gaze as he pretends to cut one.
A string on his pinky, next to the one Baekhyun had just re-tied to his ring finger, goes tight, rising up straight like an arrow to point Kyungsoo towards his next assignment.
Baekhyun’s eyes go comically wide. “Does that mean?” he starts asking, but Kyungsoo is already gone.
[He keeps coming back though, because above all, Kyungsoo is curious. He wants to know if Baekhyun’s fascination with him is because of death in general of it’s actually Kyungsoo himself]
